  • Miscommunication

    C David Mortensen, C Mortesen•BOOK•Miscommunication•1997

In this extensive study of the factors that enable or disable communication between people, author C. David Mortensen helps us to discover that successful communication is a collective and collaborative achievement of the highest order. Miscommunication begins with a theoretical examination of the complex conditions that cause miscommunication - highlighting implication, distortion, disruption, and confusion as specific categories - and then move…

  • Communication, Conflict, and Culture

    Open Access•C David Mortensen, Chris Mortensen•ARTICLE•Communication Theory•1991•References: 27

This study examines the role of complex language in the evolution of communication, conflict, and culture. The main thesis is that language, conflict, and communication initially arose from pressures built in to the critical life-or-death situations our ancestors were compelled to share with one another. From such a perspective, communication is viewed as a world-analyzing, reality-testing, survival-oriented mechanism. Complex language enables hu…

  • Predispositions Toward Verbal Behavior in Task-Oriented Interaction

    Open Access•Paul Arntson, Paul H Arntson et al.•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•1980•Cited by: 1•References: 21

Two studies were conducted that examined the interaction patterns of dissimilar PVB subjects in task oriented discussions. Their interaction was content analyzed and subjected to computer assisted Markov analysis. We found predictable behavioral, cognitive, and content differences between high, middle, and low PVB subjects. High-PVB subjects talked longer, interrupted less, initiated and reinitiated more ideas, had higher credibility, and had mor…

  • The Measurement of Verbal Predispositions

Open Access•C David Mortensen, Chris Mortensen et al.•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•1977•Cited by: 25•References: 44

A self-report instrument (PVB), designed to measure Predispositions toward Verbal Behavior, was found to have acceptable internal reliability, content validity, moderate construct validity, and strong criterion-related validity. Subjects were found to have a generalized cognitive orientation toward their speech patterning that correlated positively with number of words and duration of talk in both highly-structured interviews and unstructured dis…

  • The effect of predispositions toward verbal behavior on interaction patterns in dyads

C David Mortensen, Chris Mortensen et al.•ARTICLE•Quarterly Journal of Speech•1974•Cited by: 5

A self‐report instrument, a test of Predispositions toward Verbal Behavior, was designed to measure the cognitive orientation that persons hold toward the extent of their verbal participation in social settings. A word association task was devised to test correspondence among self reports of verbal activation, interaction patterns, and subsequent social attributions. Results showed a significant linear trend among levels of verbal activation and …
