Reflections on football fandom and fake crowd noise during Chile's Covid-19 pandemic
Sound, Precarity, and Mapuche Reality in Urban Santiago
This article explores the role of sound during the performance of the Mapuche ceremony llellipun in Santiago. It argues that ceremonial sounds create an immersive experience that facilitates intercommunication between humans, spirits, and the ecosystem amid an eco-spiritually precarious space, thereby making audible a distinctively urban Mapuche way of thinking and being in the world. In establishing and rendering perceptible human, non-human, an…
Heitor Villa-Lobos and the Traces of Coloniality in Andrés Segovia's Guitar Repertoire
Andrés Segovia's repertoire— the repertorio segoviano —has crucially shaped the guitar canon. Although some guitar scholars argue that these works helped rescue the instrument from the periphery of art music, others contend that, by commissioning music from minor, conservative composers, Segovia missed the chance to request pieces from the most influential twentieth-century modernists. This article questions the conservative homogeneity of the re…
Musical Messaging
Argentine, Chilean, and Uruguayan hinchas (soccer or football supporters) cheer for their teams primarily through contrafacta of popular music. Until recently, chants were mainly composed in stadiums and other physical spaces of fan socialization. However, the increasing dominance of the messaging app WhatsApp has altered these sociomusical relations. Drawing on ethnographic work, I argue that the messaging app has fostered both sociality and ant…
The silent majority
This article discusses the socio-aural dynamics surrounding the games of Chile Men's national team. I argue that these events echo and make audible larger forms of inequality and marginalization in Chilean society. These events have prioritized middle-class citizens who rarely attend football games. This has brought a mode of fandom that is characterized by silence and observation. Informed by practices of watching football on television and noti…
The Guitar’s Apostle
Media and scholarly publications often depict Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia as an apostle who redeemed the classical guitar from its relegation to the periphery of art music. Such ideas should be challenge by arguing that Segovia put a myth into circulation that has significantly distorted dominant historiographies of the guitar until today. Discussions about the roots and essence of the Spanish nation, the emergence of sound-reproduction tech…
