  • Evaluating rural healthcare workforce programs

Open Access•Meghan R Longacre, Linda M Kinney et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2026

PURPOSE: Healthcare workforce shortages are acute in rural areas. Using a holistic workforce retention framework, we examined evidence and identified gaps in recruitment and retention programs, using the Veterans Health Administration as a case study. METHODS: Rural workforce recruitment and retention initiatives were identified using VHA's 2023 Rural Recruitment and Hiring plan, and classified by rural focus, recruitment or retention, and streng…

  • “I didn’t go into medicine just to be on the phone”

    Satveer Kaur-Gill, Darlene K Drummond et al.•ARTICLE•Health Communication•2025

Guided by communication accommodation theory, we studied 27 physician reports of patient-physician advanced cancer communication during the COVID-19 pandemic. Advanced cancer communication requires recognizing patients' psychosocial states and collaboratively engaging patients empathetically to develop the shared understanding necessary to guide decision-making. However, physicians found their communication underaccommodated, stemming from person…

  • Finding the Value

    Open Access•Paul Barr, Paul J Barr et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2025

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to understand what patients, caregivers and clinicians identified as the most important information from their audio-recorded clinic visits and why. METHODS: We recruited patients, caregivers and clinicians from primary and speciality care clinics at an academic medical centre in New Hampshire, U.S. Participants reviewed a recording or transcript of their visit, identifying meaningful moments and the reasons why. Two researche…

  • Changes in US Primary Care Access and Capabilities During the Covid-19 Pandemic

Open Access•Matthew Mackwood, Elliott S Fisher et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2025

In this cohort study, over the time period including the COVID-19 pandemic, primary care practices reported a decline in access to care, while average practice capabilities improved. Integrated practice ownership and ACO participation were both associated with better access and capability scores, suggesting that value-based payment and integrated care delivery support the development of higher-quality primary care. Variations across practices poi…

  • Safety Net Primary Care Capabilities After the Covid-19 Pandemic

    Open Access•Karen E Schifferdecker, Ching‐Wen Yang et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2024

The results of this survey study suggest that FQHCs outperformed non-FQHC practices on important care processes while serving a patient population with lower incomes who are medically underserved compared with patients in other practice types. Legislation to expand funding for the FQHC program should improve services for underserved populations and target current non-FQHC safety net practices to serve these populations. Increased support for thes…

  • Health-related quality of life profiles of adults with arthritis and/or fibromyalgia

Open Access•Erin Knight, Kathleen L Carluzzo et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2024

We identified profiles with consistently impacted HRQOL in arthritis, though one displayed average mental health functioning despite poor physical functioning. These results highlight the value of considering the patient's HRQOL experience alongside treatment options, and the potentially positive impact of non-pharmacological interventions

  • Problematic Integration

    Darlene K Drummond, Satveer Kaur-Gill et al.•ARTICLE•Health Communication•2023

We describe racially discordant oncology encounters involving EOL decision-making. Fifty-eight provider interviews were content analyzed using the tenets of problematic integration theory. We found EOL discussions between non-Black providers and their Black patients were often complex and anxiety-inducing. That anxiety consisted of (1) ontological uncertainty in which providers characterized the nature of Black patients as distrustful, especially…

  • Psychometric characteristics of the health care empowerment questionnaire in a sample of patients with arthritis and rheumatic conditions

    Open Access•Erin Knight, Kathleen L Carluzzo et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2021

BACKGROUND: Patient empowerment can improve health-related outcomes and is important in chronic conditions, such as arthritis. This study aimed to validate the Health Care Empowerment Questionnaire (HCEQ), a patient-reported experience measure of empowerment, for use with patients with arthritis and other rheumatic diseases. METHODS: The HCEQ measures Patient Information Seeking (or Involvement in Decisions) and Healthcare Interaction Results (or…
