  • Time to check up

Open Access•Kadir Atalay, Kannika Damrongplasit et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2026

Cancer screening is central to early detection and healthy ageing, yet evidence on how major life transitions shape screening uptake remains limited. Using four waves of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey covering 2009, 2013, 2017, and 2021, with 18,875 person-wave observations from 8343 individuals aged 50-75, we estimate the causal effect of retirement on cancer screening using an instrumental-variable design …

  • Quantifying the human impact of Melbourne's 111-day hard lockdown experiment on the adult population

Open Access•Stefanie Schurer, Kadir Atalay et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2023•Referências: 52

Lockdown was used worldwide to mitigate the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 and was the cornerstone non-pharmaceutical intervention of zero-COVID strategies. Many previous impact evaluations of lockdowns are unreliable because lockdowns co-occurred with severe coronavirus disease related health and financial insecurities. This was not the case in Melbourne's 111-day lockdown, which left other Australian jurisdictions una…

  • Retirement routes and the well-being of retirees

    Open Access•Kadir Atalay, Garry F Barrett et al.•ARTICLE•Empirical Economics•2022

As the Baby-Boomer generation approaches the retirement stage of the life cycle, understanding the implications of the labour market transition for individuals' well-being is increasingly important for policy making. In this article, we assess whether individuals successfully navigate the transition from work to retirement by analysing changes in subjective well-being with retirement using Australian panel data. To account for the fact that retir…

  • The Impact of Age Pension Eligibility Age on Retirement and Program Dependence

Kadir Atalay, Garry F Barrett•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2015

Governments around the world are reforming their social security systems in light of the challenges posed by population aging. We study the 1993 Australian Age Pension reform, which progressively increased the eligibility age for women from 60 to 65 years. We find economically significant responses to the reform. An increase in the eligibility age of one year induced a decline in the probability of retirement by 12 to 19 percentage points. In add…

  • The Adequacy of Retirement Savings

Sule Alan, Kadir Atalay et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2008•Referências: 5

We examine retired Canadians’ subjective survey reports of satisfaction with finances, and with life, relative to the period before retirement. Many more retired Canadians report enjoying life more than before retirement than the converse, and in 2002 three-quarters of retired Canadians reported being either as satisfied or more satisfied with their finances than they were in the year prior to retirement. The most significant correlate of financi…
