  • Delagoa Bay and the Hinterland in the Early Nineteenth Century: Politics, Trade, Slaves, and Slave Raiding

    Elizabeth A Eldredge•CHAPTER•Slavery in South Africa•2019

During the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries commercial activities at Delagoa bay stimulated the economy of the region and prompted economic and political competition at the bay and in its hinterland. Research conducted by various scholars on trade in the Delagoa bay region has remained largely unpublished, which has hindered the analysis of political change and the rise of the slave trade at the bay. Throughout the eighteenth century peo…

  • Slave Raiding Across the Cape Frontier

    Elizabeth A Eldredge•CHAPTER•Slavery in South Africa•2019

In the nineteenth century the tradition of slave raiding, as practiced by Boers and trekboers in the eastern Cape, spread with the advancement of the Dutch frontier. Captive indigenes, the booty of countless commando raids, helped to satisfy the labor demands of these cash-poor pastoral farmers before the abolition of the overseas slave trade and became one of their principal labor sources for decades after. In districts such as Graaff-Reinet, la…

  • Sources of Conflict in Southern Africa, c. 1800–30: The ‘Mfecane’ Reconsidered

    Elizabeth A Eldredge•ARTICLE•2017•Cited by: 21•References: 18

The so-called ‘mfecane’ has been explained in many ways by historians, but never adequately. Julian Cobbing has absolved the Zulu of culpability for ongoing regional conflicts, but his work is severely flawed in its use of evidence. Cobbing is incorrect to argue that the Delagoa Bay slave trade existed on a large scale prior to the disruptions beginning in 1817, and European slaving therefore cannot have been a root cause of political turmoil and…

Violent territorial competition is one of the dominant forces in the history of southern Africa, and all historiography with reference to land has significant political ramifications to this day. Nineteenth-century sources in the history of the BaSotho reflect these political considerations, which were as salient then as they are today. In this paper I investigate the principal nineteenth-century sources for the history of land rights and land co…

Food security problems should be seen as “normal” in and endemic to subsistence agricultural groups in semi‐arid zones of developing countries. Natural, popular response mechanisms exist that address these problems when they are at “normal” levels. All response mechanisms in developing countries can be expected to be swamped in times of a major food emergency. During major crises international relief assistance will continue to play a crucial rol…
