The role of the scientific community in strengthening disability-inclusive climate resilience
The Ebola crisis and people with disabilities’ access to healthcare and government services in Liberia
There are lessons to be learned from Ebola outbreak around inclusion of people with disabilities, relevant to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Now is the time to undertake measures to ensure that people with disabilities do not continue to be marginalised and excluded during global public health emergencies
The impact of an inclusive education intervention on learning outcomes for girls with disabilities within a resource-poor setting
Findings suggest that the intervention was successful in engendering additional improvements in the educational attainment of girls with disabilities from the resource-poor Lakes region of Kenya. Results highlight both the applicability of NGO-led interventions in settings, where national implementation of inclusive education is constrained, and the potential of taking such interventions to scale

Exploring Partnerships between Academia and Disabled Persons’ Organisations
In this article, we discuss how our academic research on disability and international development in five African countries has benefited hugely from active collaboration with advocates, practitioners, and policymakers, ultimately ensuring that research evidence is used to inform policy and practice. Whilst building such partnerships is seen as good practice, it is particularly important when working on disability issues, as the clarion call of t…
The impact of an inclusive education intervention on teacher preparedness to educate children with disabilities within the Lakes Region of Kenya
There has been little empirical study within low- and middle-income countries on how to effectively prepare teachers to educate children with disabilities. This paper reports on the impact of an intervention designed to increase teaching self-efficacy, improve inclusive beliefs, attitudes and practices, and reduce concerns around the inclusion of children with disabilities within the Lakes region of Kenya. A longitudinal survey was conducted with…

Transport and Access to Inclusive Education in Mashonaland West Province, Zimbabwe
Lack of accessible transportation is considered a major barrier to education for children with disabilities—children already far less likely to attend school. While millions of children face challenges with getting to school, including long distances, poor roads, lack of transport and safety issues, these can be compounded for children with disabilities. Yet there is little data from low and middle-income countries on the nature and extent of thi…

Disability and Poverty
The international development community is beginning to recognise that people with disabilities constitute among the poorest and most vulnerable of all groups, and thus must be a core issue in development policies and programmes. Yet the relationship between disability and poverty remains ill-defined and under-researched, with few studies providing robust and verifiable data that examine the intricacies of this relationship. A second, linked issu…

Disability and public shelter in emergencies
This paper reviews current practice regarding people with disabilities in public (or communal) emergency shelter management. It shows that provision for disabled people generally fails to meet their needs and describes the main problem areas. These problems are set in the context of management and staff failings as well as underlying weaknesses in disaster management structures as a whole. The latter include outdated attitudes towards disability,…
Disability, vulnerability and citizenship
Humanitarian crises as a result of conflict are often characterised by failure of the social contract between the state and its citizens. For a variety of reasons, children with disabilities are often particularly vulnerable in time of humanitarian crisis. This paper draws on research undertaken by the authors in a series of countries affected by conflict, and looks at how the politics and policies of such countries, and the humanitarian and deve…
Internally Displaced Peoples in Bosnia-Herzegovina
Several hundred thousand people remain internally displaced in Bosnia-Herzegovina living in camps and settlements. The public gaze of the media has long since moved on elsewhere and donors have shifted their resources. Displaced peoples have specific burdens over belonging, housing, occupation, welfare, security and loss of communities. The decision whether to return to their homes is complex, with local and international political pressures addi…
