Fiscal Policy Effects on Poverty and Inequality in Cambodia
This study assesses the short-term impact of fiscal policy, and its individual elements, on poverty and inequality in Cambodia as of 2019. It applies the Commitment to Equity methodology to data from the Cambodia Socio-economic Survey of 2019/20 and fiscal administrative data from various government ministries, departments, and agencies for the assessment. The study presents among the first empirical evidence on the impact of taxes and social spe…
Home Alone: Widows’ Well-Being and Time
Using data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE, 2004–17) and time diaries from Poland (2013), the U.S. (2006–16), the U.K. (2014–15) and France (2009–10), we examine differences between widowed and partnered older women in well-being and its development in widowhood. Most importantly, our analysis accounts for time use, an aspect which has not been studied previously. We trace the evolution of well-being of women who…
Deaths during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic: Insights from regional patterns in Germany and Poland
In contrast to Germany, for Poland we do not observe the expected spatial pattern of total excess deaths and the excess deaths over and above the official COVID-19 deaths. This difference cannot be explained by pre-pandemic regional factors such as economic and population structures or by healthcare infrastructure. The findings point to the need for alternative explanations related to the Polish policy reaction to the pandemic and failures in the…
Sharing the gains of transition: Evaluating changes in income inequality and redistribution in Poland using combined survey and tax return data
We use Pareto imputation, survey reweighting, and microsimulation methods applied to combined household survey and tax return data to re-evaluate trends in income inequality and redistribution in the follow up of the post-socialist transition in Poland. Our approach results in the first estimates of top-corrected inequality trends for real equivalised disposable incomes over the years 1994–2015, a period so far believed to represent a time of not…
Healthier over time? Period effects in health among older Europeans in a step-wise approach to identification
Implications of Social and Material Deprivation for Changes in Health of Older People
Objective: We use the panel structure of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) data for 14 countries to examine the implications of material and social deprivation for health deterioration in old age and mortality. Method: To minimize the potential endogeneity bias, we examine the relationship between deprivation and changes in health rather than levels of health. We include a substantial set of fixed "initial conditions,"…
Measuring social deprivation and social exclusion
While material deprivation decreases with age, social deprivation affects those aged 65+ much more often compared to those aged 50-64 Estonia, Israel and Italy are countries with highest proportion of the 50+ suffering high levels of both material and social deprivation A two-dimensional measure of social exclusion shows strong correlation with poor health and with hearing and eyesight impairments. It is lower among the employed and those with in…
Ageing in Europe - Supporting Policies for an Inclusive Society
SHARE is an international survey designed to answer the societal challenges that face us due to rapid population ageing. How do we Europeans age? How will we do economically, socially and healthwise? How are these domains interrelated? The authors of this multidisciplinary book have taken a further big step towards answering these questions based on the recent SHARE data in order to support policies for an inclusive society
