Identifying and Supporting Students with a Chronically Ill Family Member
Young adult caregivers experience reduced wellbeing when the combination of family care and an educational program becomes too demanding. We aim to clarify the role views, competences, and needs of lecturers regarding the identification and support of these students to prevent negative mental health consequences. A mixed-methods explanatory sequential design was used. We collected quantitative data using a survey of lecturers teaching in bachelor…
Patient participation in electronic nursing documentation
BACKGROUND: Patients are increasingly expected to take an active role in their own care. Participation in nursing documentation can support patients to take this active role since it provides opportunities to express care needs and preferences. Yet, patient participation in electronic nursing documentation is not self-evident. OBJECTIVE: To explore how home-care patients perceive their participation in electronic nursing documentation. METHODS: S…
Self‐managing physical and mental health
To help older adults stay healthy and independent, different stakeholders have developed self-management programmes that aim to support older adults in maintaining or improving physical and mental health. These programmes do not always match older adults' needs and preferences. The aim of this study was to gain insight into independently living older adults' views and support needs in self-managing physical and mental health. A qualitative study …

There is a lack of service provision for young adult caregivers (18-25 years of age). This study aims to describe the expectations and prospects of young adult caregivers regarding support from health and education professionals. A qualitative focus group design was used. Twenty-five young Dutch adults (aged 18-25 years) who were growing up with a chronically ill family member participated in one of seven focus groups. Qualitative inductive analy…

Transitions during the dementia care trajectory, namely, the diagnosis, institutionalization, and death of the person with dementia, significantly affect the cohabiting partner's health
The Use of Expectancy and Empathy When Communicating With Patients With Advanced Breast Cancer; an Observational Study of Clinician–Patient Consultations
Background: Information provision about prognosis, treatments, and side-effects is important in advanced cancer, yet also associated with impaired patient well-being. To counter potential detrimental effects, communication strategies based on placebo and nocebo effect mechanisms might be promising to apply in daily practice. This study aimed to provide more insight into how often and how oncologists use expectancy and empathy expressions in consu…
People with activity limitations’ perceptions of their health condition and their relationships with social participation and experienced autonomy
Background People with activity limitations participate less in society, which may be due to both societal barriers and personal factors. The aim of this study was to examine the role of one specific personal factor, namely the perceptions that people have of their health condition. We hypothesized that perceptions of more personal control and less negative consequences increase the likelihood of participation in social activities and of experien…
Students growing up with a chronically ill family member; a survey on experienced consequences, background characteristics, and risk factors
Since a substantial number of students growing up with a chronically ill family member indicate serious physical, mental, and social consequences as a result of this care situation, awareness for this specific age-group is needed. Students with a mentally ill family member and students undertaking vocational education appear to be especially at risk. Further research is required in order to gain insight that is more in-depth into the exact type o…
Community nurses' self‐management support in older adults
Providing self-management support is an appropriate task for community nurses. However, the support of self-management sometimes triggers tensions in practice. The aim of this study was to explore community nurses' views of self-management, the dilemmas community nurses face when providing support of self-management by older adults and the strategies they use to solve these challenges. A qualitative study was performed to collect data. Twenty-one…

This study aims to describe the themes experienced by students growing up in this situation. A qualitative focus group design was used. The recruitment for this study was done through an online survey where students could indicate whether they also wanted to partici…
Implementation of a Stepwise, Multidisciplinary Intervention for Pain and Challenging Behaviour in Dementia (STA OP!)
Although the intervention was not implemented as planned, the intervention empowered healthcare professionals and increased their awareness of the signals of pain and challenging behaviour. Future implementation of the intervention should start on units with a motivational leader, and specific features of the organisation and the team should be considered to facilitate implementation, e.g. stability, support, and shared focus to change
Attractiveness of people-centred and integrated Dutch Home Care
The World Health Organization is calling for a fundamental change in healthcare services delivery, towards people-centred and integrated health services. This includes providing integrated care around people's needs that is effectively co-ordinated across providers and co-produced by professionals, the patient, the family and the community. At the same time, healthcare policies aim to scale back hospital and residential care in favour of home car…
Attractiveness of working in home care
Many western countries are experiencing a substantial shortage of home-care nurses due to the increasing numbers of care-dependent people living at home. In-depth knowledge is needed about what home-care nurses find attractive about their work in order to make recommendations for the recruitment and retention of home-care nursing staff. The aims of this explorative, qualitative study were to gain in-depth knowledge about which aspects home-care n…
Guided imagery in people with fibromyalgia
Studies on the effects of guided imagery in patients with fibromyalgia show varying results. This randomized controlled trial ( n = 65) aims to give more insight into the effects on pain, functional status, and self-efficacy. Daily pain was assessed with a pain diary using a Visual Analogue Scale. Functional status and self-efficacy were measured at pretest, posttest, and follow-up using the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire and the Chronic Pain …

Understanding and improving communication and decision-making in palliative care for Turkish and Moroccan immigrants
Care providers need to understand that for Turkish and Moroccan patients, decision-making is seldom a matter of one-to-one communication. Next to acknowledging these patients' different cultural backgrounds, they must also recognise that the families of these patients often function as care management groups, with an 'equal' say in communication and decision-making. In addition, professionals should optimise communication within their own profess…
