  • Disparities in cigarette smoking and the health of marginalized populations in the U.S

    Open Access•Diane E Levy, Stephanie S Lee et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Differences in cigarette smoking portend substantial ongoing and future disparities in life expectancy and time to reach 5% smoking prevalence. Reducing tobacco-related disparities in the U.S. will require an explicitly equity-focused vision, and the tobacco endgame will only be truly achieved when it includes all groups

  • Projected Life Expectancy for Adolescents With HIV in the US

Open Access•Anne M Neilan, Ogochukwu Ufio et al.•ARTICLE•JAMA Health Forum•2024

This adolescent-focused microsimulation modeling analysis projected that youth with HIV would have shorter life expectancy than youth without HIV. Projected differences were larger for youth with NPHIV compared with youth with PHIV. Differences in mortality by sex at birth, sexual behavior, and injection drug use contributed to lower projected life expectancy among youth with NPHIV. Interventions focused on HIV care and social factors are needed …

  • Neighborhood Social Environment and Body Mass Index

Open Access•Shayna D Cunningham, Jenny Mandelbaum et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

The association between neighborhood-built environment and body mass index (BMI) is well-characterized, whereas fewer studies have explored the mechanisms underlying the relationship between neighborhood social environment and obesogenic behaviors. Using data from a random sample of 16,820 residents ≥18 years from all 169 Connecticut towns and seven ZIP Codes in New York, this study examines the influence of neighborhood social environment on res…

  • Impact of pre-exposure prophylaxis uptake among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in urban centers in Brazil

Open Access•Paula M Luz, Vijeta Deshpande et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

  • Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Persistence at a Diverse Sexual Health Clinic

    Open Access•Laura Platt, F M Shebl et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2023

The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted health care delivery and exacerbated disparities. Many sexual health clinics transitioned to telemedicine, including for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients at an urban sexual health clinic to assess the likelihood and predictors of PrEP persistence in the year following PrEP initiation. We compared patients starting PrEP in the four months preceding the first CO…

  • Area-level deprivation and preterm birth

    Open Access•Rekha Mehra, F M Shebl et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

Even among commercially-insured women, area-level deprivation was associated with increased risk of preterm birth. Similar to individual socioeconomic status, area-level deprivation does not have a threshold effect. Implementation of policies to reduce area-level deprivation, and the screening and treatment of maternal mediators may be associated with a lower risk of preterm birth

  • The effects of acculturation and environment on lifestyle behaviors in Korean immigrants

Chorong Park, Soohyun Nam et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 8

In our study, acculturation and environmental support for physical activity and healthy food simultaneously influenced KIs' lifestyle behaviors. Addressing an unhealthy body image and acculturative stress may be additional strategies for lifestyle intervention programs to prevent cardiometabolic diseases in KIs

  • The Effects of Length of Residence and Exposure to Violence on Perceptions of Neighborhood Safety in an Urban Sample

Objectives. Methods. From 2006 to 2010, 203 Latinos (intervention group, n = 100; control group, n = 103) in Hartford County, Connecticut, with type 2 diabetes were randomized to an intervention that included 17 CHW-led home-based sessions o…
