Integrated Care Within New Zealand’s Specialist Mental Health and Addiction Services
Internationally, and within New Zealand (NZ), specialist mental health and addiction service-users (SMHAS-users) experience increased risks of comorbidities and premature mortality, and poorer health outcomes, compared to the general population. In particular, Indigenous Māori SMHAS-users face significant inequities compared to non-Māori. Integrated care has been found to improve outcomes by improving quality and coordination between services. Th…
Experiences of Racial Discrimination
Racism is a recognised determinant of health internationally and in New Zealand (NZ). Racism is instantiated through racial discrimination, including discriminatory attitudes and practices. Associations between racial discrimination and unfavourable health-related experiences and outcomes have been reported for specific groups in NZ, including for Māori (the Indigenous people of NZ) and for those of Asian and Pacific ethnicities. However, less ap…

Interviewing injured New Zealanders for paired longitudinal studies
There is a growing body of literature outlining the influence of interviewers on the success of research studies, yet a paucity of research has focused on understanding the experiences of interviewers themselves. Considering this knowledge gap, this opportunistic qualitative study examined the experiences of interviewers conducting structured telephone follow-up interviews for the paired longitudinal cohort studies of injured New Zealanders, ‘The…
Kia Whakatōmuri te Haere Whakamua
Many Indigenous- specific research paradigms are used internationally. Kaupapa Māori is one such paradigm that privileges and legitimises Māori knowledge, culture, language, customs and protocols. The qualitative Kaupapa Māori paradigm presented here includes establishing an expert advisory rōpū and a Māori-led research team, developing and pilot testing a Māori data collection method (wānanga interviews), conducting wānanga, and analysing the co…
Barriers to adopting digital contact tracing for Covid‐19
BACKGROUND: Digital contact tracing (DCT) was a central component of the global response to containing COVID-19. Research has raised concerns that DCT could exacerbate inequities, yet the experiences of diverse communities at greater risk from COVID-19 are typically underrepresented. METHODS: The present study aimed to understand the perceived barriers to the adoption of the app amongst Māori, Pasifika, and disabled people. Focus groups and inter…
Two heads are better than one’—exploring the experiences of Ghanaian communities on the role of patient and public participation in health system improvement
Patient and Public Participation (PPP) is key to improving health systems. Yet, studies have shown that PPP implementations across many countries have been largely tokenistic. Particularly, in Ghana, whilst PPP is prioritized in national health policies and legislation, there appears to be little research focused on understanding PPP’s role in health system improvement. The aim of this study, therefore, is to examine how PPP is working across the…
Barely keeping the wheels on the trolley
Digital contact tracing apps were developed to help control the spread of COVID-19 but research exploring these apps has underrepresented both 'at-risk' communities and contact tracers. Our study examines perspectives of the New Zealand COVID Tracer app among 53 participants, comprising policy advisors, contact tracers, and Māori, Pacific, and disability stakeholders, underpinned by the theory of social construction of which positions technology …
Implementing patient–public engagement for improved health
BACKGROUND: Community-based health interventions have been implemented as a key strategy for achieving improved health outcomes in Ghana. Effectiveness, however, largely depends on the successful implementation of patient-public engagement (PPE). Although several PPE studies have been conducted in Ghana, little research has been done to understand the specific role of PPE in the context of implementing community-based health programmes. This pape…
Long-Term Disability Outcomes for Migrants (and Non-migrants) 12 Years Post-injury
To understand, and identify predictors of, long-term post-injury (i.e. 12 years post-injury) disability outcomes for migrants and non-migrants. This 12-year longitudinal study followed participants with entitlement claim injuries registered with New Zealand's universal no-fault injury insurer between 2007 and 2009. Information was collected about migrant status, other sociodemographic, health and disability characteristics, and injury characteris…
Health-related quality of life 12 years after injury
An approach to rehabilitation where health services proactively enquire about, and consider the broader aspects of, patient health and wellbeing throughout the injury recovery process, and effectively coordinate their patients' care with other health and social services where necessary, may help improve long-term HRQoL outcomes for injured Māori
Describing the health-related quality of life of Māori adults in Aotearoa me Te Waipounamu (New Zealand)
To reduce inequities experienced by Māori it is crucial that the health status of Māori and the values Māori place on health-related quality of life are properly understood. This can only be achieved using Māori-specific data
Life satisfaction 18 months and 10 years following spinal cord injury
A higher proportion of participants were satisfied at both 18 months and 10 years post-SCI than not satisfied. To improve the likelihood of satisfaction with life, increased focus on reducing disability and providing supports for those using wheelchairs, experiencing anxiety/depression or problems with self-care, and effects of SHCs are promising for future potential interventions
Expert insights on digital contact tracing
Digital contact tracing (DCT) is the application of digital tools to assist with identifying and informing close contacts of a COVID-19 case. DCT is a potential solution to capacity constraints of current manual contact tracing processes. Expert opinion from contact tracing professionals rarely informs public discourse on the benefits and limitations of DCT solutions. Three focus groups were undertaken in New Zealand to understand benefits and li…

Do outcomes differ between work and non-work-related injury in a universal injury compensation system? Findings from the New Zealand Prospective Outcomes of Injury Study
Our study, comparing recovery outcomes for workers by injury setting within a single universal entitlement injury compensation scheme, found mixed support for the hypothesis tested. After adjustment for possible covariates recovery outcomes did not differ by injury setting at 3 months following injury, however, by 12 months vocational, disability and some functional outcomes, were poorer for workers with work-related injuries. Given our findings,…

Currently, little is known about care integration for rural patients. OBJECTIVE: To examine challenges to care integration in rural safety net clinics and strategies to address these challenges. RESEARCH DESIGN: Qual…
Associations Between Medical Home Characteristics and Support for Patient Activation in the Safety Net
BACKGROUND: Few studies have evaluated whether the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) supports patient activation and none have evaluated whether support for patient activation differs among racial and ethnic groups or by health status. This is critical because activation is lower on average among minority patients and those in poorer health. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between clinic PCMH characteristics and patient perception of clin…

This paper provides an overview of injury estimates from the 2013 update of GBD, with detailed information on incidence, mortality, DALYs and rates of change from 1990 to 2013 for 26 causes of injury, globally, by region and by country. METHODS: Injury morta…
Global, regional, and national incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability for 310 diseases and injuries, 1990–2015
BACKGROUND: Non-fatal outcomes of disease and injury increasingly detract from the ability of the world's population to live in full health, a trend largely attributable to an epidemiological transition in many countries from causes affecting children, to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) more common in adults. For the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 (GBD 2015), we estimated the incidence, prevalence, and years liv…
