  • Stage at Diagnosis and Survival in a Multiethnic Cohort of Prostate Cancer Patients

    Ingrid Oakley-Girvan, Ingrid Oakley‐Girvan et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2003•Cited by: 4•References: 52

Objectives. We evaluated the effects of socioeconomic status and comorbidity on stage of disease and survival among 1,509 population-based prostate cancer patients. Methods. We applied logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards regression to data from Whites, African Americans, and Asian Americans who were diagnosed from 1987 to 1991. Results. Patients with existing comorbid conditions were less likely than those without these conditions to…

  • Mortality and cancer incidence among sawmill workers exposed to chlorophenate wood preservatives

Clyde Hertzman, Kay Teschke et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1997•Cited by: 2•References: 25

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the association between exposure to chlorophenates and the risk of soft tissue sarcoma; non-Hodgkin's lymphoma; Hodgkin's disease; and cancers of the lung, nose, and nasopharynx. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted of 26487 workers employed for at least 1 year between 1950 and 1985 in 11 chlorophenate-using and 3 non-using sawmills in British Columbia, Canada. Exposures by job were ascertained with …

  • The classification of ethnic status using name information

    A J Coldman, T Braun et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1988•Cited by: 7

Methodology is developed to classify ethnic status by name using a simple probabilistic model. This method involves the consideration of four rules which may be used to classify individuals using three name components (first, middle and last names). In order to do this, conditional probabilities of ethnic status are estimated from a sample in which the ethnic status is known. Using a split sample technique the sensitivity and specificity of this …
