Inner dimensions, outer change
Artisanal and small-scale gold mining is a critical livelihood activity across the Global South, but it remains enmeshed in environmental degradation and governance deficits. In Madre de Dios, Peru, government-led formalization efforts have failed to resolve these complex issues. Drawing on qualitative interviews with ten leaders from mining collectives and ten key informants, we apply a value-oriented leadership framework to explore how leaders’…
Health system barriers to hypertension care in Peru
Traditional patient- and provider-level hypertension interventions have proven insufficient to halt hypertension as the leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Systems-level interventions are required to address factors challenging hypertension control across a social ecological framework, an under-studied topic particularly salient in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as Peru. To inform such interventions, we sought to ide…
Waterscapes meet socio‐ecological models
Water insecurity, the inability to benefit from affordable, adequate, reliable and safe water, is one of the greatest contemporary threats facing humans. While ‘water insecurity’, as a concept, is globally recognized and serves an essential function in policymaking, it does not capture the multiple, relational connections between Indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs) and water systems. We contend that studies of water insecurity and he…
Adoption of sustainable low-impact fishing practices is not enough to secure sustainable livelihoods and social wellbeing in small-scale fishing communities

Metabolic syndrome risk unexpectedly predicted by traditional food consumption
We suggest that the unexpected relationship between traditional food consumption and metabolic syndrome may be due to substantial reductions in the diversity of traditional foods. Currently available traditional foods are primarily high in carbohydrates and are supplemented with cheap, non-perishable, and carbohydrate heavy market food items
The “Double Burden of Malnutrition” in the Amazon
Undernutrition and overnutrition are interconnected. Yet few studies have examined the "double burden of malnutrition" (DBM) over time in indigenous communities. We investigated changes in the food systems and nutritional health of Awajún communities in the Peruvian Amazon in the 1970s and in 2013. Methods included ethnography, 24 hr food recalls, and biological measures. In 2013, the number of traditional foods consumed decreased to 10% of level…
