A Reconsideration of the Self-Compassion Scale’s Total Score
The Self-Compassion Scale (SCS) is currently the only self-report instrument to measure self-compassion. The SCS is widely used despite the limited evidence for the scale's psychometric properties, with validation studies commonly performed in college students. The current study examined the factor structure, reliability, and construct validity of the SCS in a large representative sample from the community. The study was conducted in 1,736 person…
Ineffectiveness of Reverse Wording of Questionnaire Items
OBJECTIVE: We examined the effectiveness of reverse worded items as a means of reducing or preventing response bias. We first distinguished between several types of response bias that are often confused in literature. We next developed arguments why reversing items is probably never a good way to address response bias. We proposed testing whether reverse wording affects response bias with item-level data from the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventor…
Lack of Prognostic Value of Type D Personality for Mortality in a Large Sample of Heart Failure Patients
In the largest study to date, Type D does not predict mortality. Future research should construe Type D as the interaction of continuous negative affectivity and social inhibition z scores, rather than as a typology, and consider analyses replacing negative affectivity with depression
Risk and Protective Factors of Different Functional Trajectories in Older Persons
We examined whether risk and protective factors of different functional trajectories were the same in 1,765 Dutch older persons. We assessed disability in 1993 and reassessed it in 2001. For 2001 as compared with 1993, we distinguished three trajectory groups: substantially poorer, somewhat poorer, and no change or better functioning. We assessed sociodemographic, health, and psychosocial potential risk or protective factors in 1993. When we anal…
The Role of Perceived Control in the Process of Older Peoples' Recovery of Physical Functions After Fall-Related Injuries
This study examined the predictive role of perceived control in recovery of physical functions after fall-related injuries in a cohort of 165 older people who had completed preinjury baseline assessments including physical functioning and perceived control. Follow-up assessments of functioning were made at 8 weeks, 5 months, and 12 months. Indicators for perceived control were mastery and self-efficacy expectations. Physical functioning referred …
Structure and Reliability of Ware’s Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire III
BACKGROUND: The present study examined the structure and reliability of the Dutch version of the Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire III (PSQ III). The PSQ III was designed to measure technical competence, interpersonal manner, communication, time spent with doctor, financial aspects, and access to care. In the Dutch version, the financial items were left aside because these are not appropriate for the Dutch socialized system. OBJECTIVES: The main…
An English Language Version of the Social Support List
The 34-item Social Support List developed in The Netherlands combines measures of support satisfaction and support interactions in six subscales plus a total score. The present study was designed to assess the applicability of the list in a different cultural context. Data from 421 American undergraduates were consistent with Dutch findings and support the efficacy of the English language version
Statistical significant change versus relevant or important change in (quasi) experimental design
This paper aims to identify problems in estimating and the interpretation of the magnitude of intervention-related change over time or responsiveness assessed with health outcome measures. Responsiveness is a problematic construct and there is no consensus on how to quantify the appropriate index to estimate change over time between baseline and post-test designs. This paper gives an overview of several responsiveness indices. Thresholds for effe…
Temporal and Reciprocal Relationship Between Iadl/ADL Disability and Depressive Symptoms in Late Life
A strong association between functional disability and depressive symptoms in older people has frequently been reported. Some studies attribute this association to the disabling effects of depression, others to the depressogenic effects of physical health-related disability. The authors examined the reciprocal effects between depressive symptoms and functional disability and their temporal character in a community-based cohort of 753 older people…

Performance-Based and Self-Reported Physical Functioning in Low-Functioning Older Persons
This prospective cohort study examines the impact of depressive symptoms on changes in self-reported physical functioning in 574 low-functioning older persons. The data were collected in two waves in 1993 and 1995. Initial levels of depressive symptoms were not predictive for subsequent change in self-reported physical functioning. Changes in self-reported physical functioning were only moderately associated with changes in performance-based phys…
The Impact of Psychological Attributes on Changes in Disability Among Low-Functioning Older Persons
We studied the impact of four psychological attributes (neuroticism, extraversion, mastery or perceived control, and general self-efficacy expectancies) on changes in disability in a community-based sample of 575 low-functioning elderly persons between 1993 and 1995. Unlike elderly persons with low or medium levels of mastery and general self-efficacy expectancies, older persons with high levels of such attributes showed no significant increase o…
Longer pre-hospital delay in acute myocardial infarction in women because of longer doctor decision time
STUDY OBJECTIVE: To measure the pre-hospital delay times in patients with proven acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and to identify possibilities for reduction of treatment delay. DESIGN: Descriptive three centre study. SETTING: One university teaching hospital and two regional hospitals in Groningen, the Netherlands. PATIENTS: 400 consecutive confirmed AMI patients, age below 75 years, admitted to coronary care departments. MAIN RESULTS: Mean age…
