‘It all depends on your faith’
Despite biomedical explanations for diseases being increasingly accepted in sub-Saharan Africa, traditional African explanatory models of illness remain widespread. This study sought to understand local explanatory models for illness and patient experiences with different traditional health practitioners (THPs) among a population of rural women in Limpopo, South Africa. This was a cross-sectional qualitative study in which eighty-two in-depth int…
Physiological Markers of Early Social Skills in Rural South Africa
Early social skills underlie the development of crucial regulatory and behavioral processes across childhood. EEG frontal alpha asymmetry and heart rate variability are two physiological markers that have been extensively studied in relation to social skills in high‐income country (HIC) samples. The prevalence of adversities in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs) is linked to pervasive deficits in early social skills, yet little is known abo…
Traditional beliefs and practices surrounding pregnancy loss in Limpopo Province, South Africa
South Africa has a diversity of traditional beliefs and practices within its existing sub-cultures which include complex belief patterns around women's sexual and reproductive health, including pregnancy loss (i.e. abortion or miscarriage). Causes of pregnancy loss among the different cultures can be attributed broadly to ancestors, bewitchment, and ritual pollution. However, of these factors, ritual pollution has not been adequately researched. …
Sleep, Poverty, and Biological Stress
In the first years of life, poverty increases the risk of sleep problems such as late bedtimes and frequent night awakenings. In turn, children with sleep problems are more likely to go on to have poor physical and mental health outcomes as adults. The development of sleep and biological stress systems is connected, so that sleep problems can lead to abnormal function of the stress hormone cortisol and contribute to enduring socioeconomic health …

Error-related negativity (ERN) and ‘hot’ executive function in bilingual and monolingual preschoolers
Early regular experience with dual-language management is thought to shape executive function (EF) circuitry during development. However, previous investigations of bilingual children's EF have largely focused on behavioral measures, or on cognitive aspects of EF. The first part of this study compared monolingual and bilingual preschoolers’ performance on more purely cognitive and more affective versions of a card-sort task, and the second part i…
Fear of terrorism and its correlates in young men and women from the United States and South Korea
Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine associations between fear of terrorism and several predictors (gender and nationality) and outcomes (moral disengagement, authoritarianism, aggression and social anxiety) in the USA and South Korean young adults. Of particular interest were the potential moderating and mediating roles of moral disengagement between fear of terrorism and the other outcomes. Design/methodology/approach Samples of 251…
Atypical EEG power correlates with indiscriminately friendly behavior in internationally adopted children
While effects of institutional care on behavioral development have been studied extensively, effects on neural systems underlying these socioemotional and attention deficits are only beginning to be examined. The current study assessed electroencephalogram (EEG) power in 18-month-old internationally adopted, postinstitutionalized children (n = 37) and comparison groups of nonadopted children (n = 47) and children internationally adopted from fost…
Inhibition and exuberance in preschool classrooms
Associations between behavioral inhibition and activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) system, a stress-sensitive neuroendocrine system indexed by salivary cortisol, have varied widely across studies. In the current study, we examined the role of peer social experiences in moderating patterns of association between inhibition/risk-aversion and cortisol reactivity. As expected based on previous research, preschool children (N =…
False Belief and Emotion Understanding in Post‐institutionalized Children
Deficits in social cognition may impair the ability to negotiate social transactions and relationships and contribute to socio emotional difficulties experienced by some post‐institutionalized children. We examined false belief and emotion understanding in 40 institutional care‐adopted children, 40 foster care‐adopted children and 40 birth children. Both groups of adopted children were adopted internationally. Controlling for verbal ability, post…
