Healthcare gaps and inequities following hospitalisation for Covid-19 in Brazil’s universal healthcare system
The SUS is not meeting the high need for LC healthcare, raising concerns about deepening health inequities. In Brazil, as elsewhere, LC joins other IACCs in becoming an invisibilised epidemic, with LC patients, especially those unable to pay for care, neglected amid general healthcare backlogs. A comprehensive pandemic response must include dedicated efforts to surveil and treat the long-term impacts of infection

Covid and Camus
As a social worker and qualitative researcher, I read Albert Camus’s The Plague as I lay recovering from COVID-19. The existential novella documents the experience of the citizens of Oran, Algeria during a fictional epidemic, and The Narrator’s documentation is explicitly based on qualitative “data” from participant observation, key informant accounts, and document analysis. Camus’s text forces the reader to reflect on what it means to qualitativ…
Identifying research Participation effects through qualitative methods
Research participation effects (RPEs)—effects due to study design rather than study intervention—have long been acknowledged as a research phenomenon. Identifying RPEs is crucial to understanding the true effects of an intervention and outcomes may change during dissemination. Few researchers systematically identify the potential role of RPEs on their research findings, despite recent calls to capture these effects. This study demonstrates the ut…

Total Worker Health ® (TWH) interventions that utilize integrated approaches to advance worker safety, health, and well-being can be challenging to design and implement in practice. This may be especially true for the food service industry, characterized by high levels of injury and turnover. This paper illustrates how we used TWH Implementation Guidelines to develop and implement an organizational intervention to improve pain, injury, and well-b…
