Rabbinic Responsa and Spiritual Resistance during the Holocaust
In this article, we examine in detail a set of little-known texts arising from the Holocaust: the decisions given by rabbis in response to cases where the Germans and their collaborators attempted to force Jews to decide who among them would live and who would die. The genre that these decisions fit into is known as rabbinic responsa: the written decisions of rabbinic authorities on questions of law and practice in daily Jewish life.1 Rarely stud…
Childhood family psychosocial environment and carotid intima media thickness
Associations of Anger, Anxiety, and Depressive Symptoms With Carotid Arterial Wall Thickness
OBJECTIVE: Carotid arterial wall thickness, measured as intima-media thickness (IMT), is an early subclinical indicator of cardiovascular disease. Few studies have investigated the association of psychological factors with IMT across multiple ethnic groups and by sex. METHODS: We included 6561 men and women (2541 whites, 1790 African Americans, 1436 Hispanics, and 794 Chinese) aged 45 to 84 years who took part in the first examination of the Mult…
Do Socioeconomic Gradients in Subclinical Atherosclerosis Vary According to Acculturation Level? Analyses of Mexican-Americans in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the association between socioeconomic position (SEP) and subclinical atherosclerosis in Mexican-Americans would be moderated by acculturation. Although SEP shows a consistent, inverse relationship with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in westernized non-Hispanic white populations, the relationship in ethnic minorities, including Hispanics, is often weak or even reversed (i.e., worse health with higher SEP). METHODS:…
Predictors of Perceived Health Status in Elderly Men and Women
Baseline data on the perceived health status of participants (N = 5,201) in the Cardiovascular Health Study of the Elderly (CHS) are reported. The authors examined the predictive utility of health-related factors representing eight different domains, assessed gender differences in the prediction of perceived health, and tested a hypothesis regarding the role of known clinical conditions versus subclinical disease in predicting perceived health. M…
