I Grew Up Longing to Be What I Wasn't”: Mixed-Methods Analysis of Amerasians' Experiences in the United States and Vietnam
The Vietnam War left a legacy of mostly mixed-race children fathered by American (or other foreign) soldiers and born to Vietnamese mothers. These Vietnamese Amerasian children often had difficulties integrating into their post-conflict societies due to stigmatisation, and they were typically economically severely disadvantaged. This paper compares experiences of Amerasians in Vietnam with those who emigrated to the US as part of various departur…
Intentions to use alcohol among fifth and sixth graders: The roles of social and stress/coping motives
This study of children in grades five and six assessed the relationship between social and stress/coping motives and students' intentions to drink in junior high school. Whereas the two motives were not seen as separate by fifth graders, they were differentiated by sixth graders, for whom they were associated--social motives more strongly than stress/coping motives--with intentions to use alcohol. Implications for the design and timing of prevent…
The prevalence of psychiatric disorders among Vietnamese Amerasians: A pilot study
A pilot study of the prevalence rate of DSM-III psychiatric disorders among Vietnamese Amerasians prior to migration from Vietnam found current prevalence of such disorders to be lower than previously reported among Vietnamese refugees in the United States and Australia. Methodological and cultural factors contributing to the lower than expected prevalence rate are discussed, and implications for clinical assessments and future research are noted
Unaccompanied status as a risk factor in Vietnamese Amerasians
Refugee patients and the practice of deception
The example of an Amerasian Vietnamese case study is used to illustrate the complex and interactive effects of refugee status, diverse cultural traditions, and traumatic life events on refugee patients' willingness and ability to share the details of their lives and to enter wholeheartedly into the diagnostic and therapeutic process. Ways in which clinicians working with such patients can increase the accuracy of their database and further the de…
Development of an Abbreviated Fonr of the Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire for Adolescents
This article reports the development of an abbreviated version of the Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire for Adolescents (AEQ-A) that has acceptable psychometric properties. A sample of seventh graders was split randomly into two halves, and the abbreviated version was developed using the two halves of the sample, including cross validation with half of the sample. All 90 items of the seven original AEQ-A subscales were administered to both halves …
Concurrent and Longitudinal Assessment of Risk for Alcohol Use among Seventh Graders
This study examined the relationship between risk factors and alcohol use among seventh graders concurrently and over a 15-month period. Subjects were classified as abstainers, experimenters and users based on a quantity-frequency index of usage. A discriminant analysis predicting alcohol usage using concurrent risk factors generated two functions. The first was composed of measures associated with deviance and peer-related measures. Family-relat…
