  • Intercultural Incommensurability and the Globalization of Chinese Medicine: The Case of Acupuncture

Open Access•Robert N St Clair, Walter Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Comparative Asian…•2006•References: 2

It is normally assumed that the globalization of medical practice emanates from the West, but the Chinese practice of acupuncture has proven this hypothesis incorrect. Western medicine has not rejected the concept of acupuncture. It has embraced it and has investigated the benefits that such practices provide. Since Western medicine is already framed within the epistemological context of germ theory, the problem becomes one of finding a way in wh…

  • Labov, William. What is a Linguistic Fact

    Robert N St Clair•ARTICLE•Language Problems & Language…•1979

    Robert N St Clair•ARTICLE•Language Problems & Language…•1978

Tiuj procedoj produktas unusolan, malsimplan kapablon je pluraj lingvoj. La socia uzo de la scio de li…

    Robert N St Clair•ARTICLE•Language Problems & Language…•1978

    Robert N St Clair•ARTICLE•Language Problems & Language…•1977

The speech community of the Hawaiian Islands is of theoretical interest to both the sociologist and the linguist. The reasons for this are clear. In the first place, it has a linguistic repetoire which is characteristic of multilingual societies. This is a direct consequence of the influx of immigrant labor from China, Korea, the Philippines, Okinawa, Japan, and Portugal and their social and linguistic contacts with the native Hawaiians and the E…
