Blame and Digital Hostility Among Displaced Ukrainians: Psychological Impacts of Leaving During War
This study examined the psychological impact of the 2022 Russian invasion on Ukrainian migrants in the United States. Using data from 703 participants, we examined whether U.S.-based Ukrainians blamed Russian citizens for the invasion, how their perceptions of Russians changed, and whether they experienced digital hostility for leaving Ukraine. A structural equation model tested the associations between these factors on cultural and family-econom…
Polysubstance Use Trajectories and Social-Ecological Predictors in a Multi-Ethnic Sample of Adolescents
Background Substance use—including the use and co-use of alcohol, cigarettes, and illicit drugs—often emerges in adolescence. However, the longitudinal structure of polysubstance use and its social-ecological predictors are less understood. We examined (a) higher-order trajectories of polysubstance use (encompassing alcohol, cigarette, and illicit drug use) and (b) their associations with individual- and family-level factors. Methods Participants …
Optimism predicts future economic mobility among hurricane maria migrants
In the United States, the frequency and severity of climate-related disasters continue to rise, leading to increased displacement of individuals and families. Those forcibly displaced often face heightened uncertainty, vulnerability to mental and cultural stressors, and economic insecurity. Economic mobility during and after resettlement may, to some extent, be a function of migrant adaptation, mental health, and psychological functioning. Howeve…
Exploring the influence of cultural identity on mental health and cultural stress in Puerto Rican Hurricane Maria surviving families
Development of the Multidimensional Inventory of Cultural Stress Measure for Hispanic/Latine Adolescents
The present study provides preliminary evidence for validity of the Multidimensional Inventory of Cultural Stress (MICS), a measure of cultural stress developed to expand existing conceptualizations of cultural stress. The participants were 309 Hispanic/Latine adolescents (60.2% female; M age = 15.30 years). Exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) revealed a four-factor solution: exclusionary political climate (i.e., perception of anti-im…

Navigating Cultural Stress and Mental Health: A Longitudinal Study of Parent‐Adolescent Dynamics Among Former Soviet Union Families
INTRODUCTION: Cultural stressors during migration can shape family dynamics and impact mental health outcomes. This study investigates the relationship between cultural stress, parent-adolescent communication, and psychological well-being among Former Soviet Union (FSU) immigrant families in Israel. METHODS: This longitudinal survey study collected data at three time points. The first wave of data collection occurred between June and August 2020,…
Optimism and language proficiency predict incidence of and remission from PTSD among climate migrants
We observed a rapid initial remission from positive PTSD screen for a substantial portion of the sample. Participants who are proficient in English language may be most likely to screen positive for PTSD over time and least likely to remit from a positive PTSD screen. Findings underscore the importance of optimism and higher English proficiency for both decreased incidence of and increased remission from PTSD. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2025 A…
Thriving amidst adversity: Longitudinal subjective well-being and economic mobility in the Puerto Rican climate diaspora
Cultural–economic stress and mental health among Ukrainian immigrants residing in the U.S. post-Russian invasion
5.01). Importantly, individuals arriving after the invasion were disproportionately represented in the high-stress class, with a significant majority meeting criteria for probable anxiety, depression, and PTSD diagnoses. Furthermore, a substantial portion of high-stress participants met criteria for alcohol dependence, emphasizing the pivotal role of stressors in influencing the mental health of Ukrainian migrants, and suggesting the need for tai…

Disentangling the directionality among cultural stressors and psychosocial outcomes in recently immigrated Hispanic families: A random intercept cross‐lagged panel model approach
Research shows the impact of cultural stressors (e.g. perceived discrimination, bicultural stressors, negative context of reception) on adolescents' psychosocial outcomes. Given the presence of multiple cultural stressors in many Hispanic adolescents' lives, it is essential to examine the (a) developmental sequencing of cultural stressors among recent immigrant youth and (b) predictive effects of cultural stressors on adolescents' psychosocial ou…

Ethnic discrimination, cultural identification, and well-being among undocumented Hispanic immigrants in the United States: A test of the rejection–identification model
34.83), gender (50% men), and time spent in the United States were included as covariates. Higher ethnic discrimination was associated with lower U.S. and ethnic identity. Both ethnic and U.S. identity were positively associated with flourishing, whereas only U.S. identity was positively associated with life satisfaction. We also found a significant indirect effect of ethnic identity in the relationship between ethnic discrimination and flourishi…
Cultural Stressors and Cultural Identity Styles Among Hispanic College Students
Research shows that cultural identity styles (CIS; i.e., hybrid identity style [HIS] vs. alternating identity style [AIS]) and cultural stressors (i.e., discrimination, negative context of reception, and bicultural stressors) are associated, but the directionality of this association remains unclear. Using a 2-wave, self-report dataset and a cross-lagged design, we examined the directionality of the associations between cultural stressors and CIS…
The emotional citizen: Positive affective response towards immigrants predicts meaningful experiences with them and lower Covid-19 perceived threat in nine countries
Mass migration and COVID-19 represent two converging challenges affecting immigrant-receiving countries. Our understanding of intergroup emotion profiles—positive (happiness, hope, and sympathy) and negative (anger, fear, and disgust)—among members of immigrant destination societies in times of global uncertainty remains limited. Drawing from panel samples from nine countries ( N = 13,645), and controlling for relevant covariates, we aimed to ext…

Identification and comparison of school well-being patterns of migrant and native lower secondary-school students in Greece and Switzerland: A multigroup latent profile analysis approach
Questionnaire data from a cross-sectional study of two samples on adolescents of 814 lower secondary school students (M_age = 12.47) from Greece (n = 439) and Switzerland (n = 375) were used to identify and compare school well-being patterns of migrant and native students by multigroup latent profile analyses (LPA). The aim of this paper, by applying LPA as a typological approach, is to delve empirically into the question whether migrant and nati…
Longitudinal Changes in Swiss Adolescent’s Mental Health Outcomes from before and during the Covid-19 Pandemic
This study aimed to explore changes in mental health outcomes (depression, anxiety, home, and school stress) from before the first COVID-19 wave (autumn 2019) to the later stages of the same wave (autumn 2020) in a sample of N = 377 Swiss adolescents ( M age = 12.67; 47% female). It also examined whether students' background characteristics (gender, immigrant status, and socio-economic status) and reported COVID-19 burden predicted students' outc…
Long-term interrelations between socio-emotional and language competencies among preschool dual language learners in Germany
BackgroundRecent research has shown that socio-emotional and language competencies are positively associated with each other. However, few studies have explored these associations for the second language competencies (L2) of young dual language learners (DLLs).AimsThis longitudinal study investigated possible bidirectional associations between L2 language (expressive and receptive vocabulary) and socio-emotional competencies among preschool DLLs.…
