  • Resource Nationalism in Zimbabwe: Alternative Visions and Policy Realities

Richard G Saunders, Lyman Mlambo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2023

A new wave of resource nationalism washed through southern Africa in the 2000s, driven by rising popular demand for greater local participation in the mining sector value chain, more equitable redistribution of benefits from extractives and strengthened transparency and accountability on the part of local states and foreign-owned mining companies. In the context of heightened political contestation and improved commodity prices, a succession of p…

  • Policy as Performance: Indigenisation and Resource Nationalism in Zimbabwe in the 2000s

    Richard G Saunders•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2023

In 2008, in the midst of a deepening political-economic crisis, Zimbabwe’s ZANU(PF) government introduced ‘Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment’ as a policy framework to guide the domestication of foreign firms then dominating the formal economy. At the same time, debates around resource nationalism were emerging in the country’s extractives sector, which was booming in the wake of a global surge in minerals prices. The intersection of indigen…

  • An extractive developmental state in Southern Africa? The cases of Zambia and Zimbabwe

    Richard G Saunders, Richard Saunders et al.•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 37

In recent years, an upturn in international commodity markets and the poor development performance of mineral rich African countries have catalysed the resurgence of debate and policy initiatives focused on extractivist models of growth in southern Africa. Beginning with debates on the ‘resource curse’, the East Asian developmental state and ‘developmental patrimonialism’, we extend the discussion to consider key unique challenges in contemporary…

  • The Civil War Years in Utah: The Kingdom of God and the Territory that Did Not Fight. By John Gary Maxwell

    Richard G Saunders, Richard Saunders•ARTICLE•Western Historical Quarterly•2017

By any measure, the 1860s were a “complicated, divisive, conflict-laden history” (p. xvii), in Utah Territory no less than the rest of the country. There the war years were an impossible time characterized by immoveable objects and irresistible forces, interactions fueled by suspicion, insecurity, purple rhetoric, and barely disguised ambition on every side. By assembling a broader and more careful grasp of fact the author seeks to correct faith-…

  • Geologies of power: Blood diamonds, security politics and Zimbabwe's troubled transition

    Richard G Saunders, Richard Saunders•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary African…•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 3

The article shows how the 2006 discovery of significant deposits of diamonds in eastern Zimbabwe transformed the minerals sector and its nascent regional business networks, with significant political implications. It argues that diamond revenues have been used to prop up the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) party and maintain its hold on the state and dominance in the Government of National Unity. Internal battle…

When Zimbabwe attained its first independent government in 1980, led by President Robert Mugabe and liberation fighters of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF), there were reasons to hope for a bright future. The new country inherited significant infrastructure from the prior Rhodesian settler regime, including relatively modern transportation and communications systems and an impressive set of import substitution industr…

John S Saul, Richard G Saunders et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal Canada s…•2005•Cited by: 6

Twenty-five years after Robert Mugabe brought Zimbabwe to independence in 1980, some might interpret the current, apparent reradicalization of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front's (ZANU-PF) political project as a last, leftist, quasi-Gramscian gambit to recapture lost popular legitimacy. Many more, however, see it instead as reflecting the final throes of an increasingly compromised, corrupt, militarized, and unpopular regime. In…
