  • Blighted Democracy

    Mosa Phadi, Mosa M Phadi•ARTICLE•Society in Transition•2023

This year marks 30 years since South Africa’s transition to democracy. The shadow of disappointment hangs over this milestone. The country on the southernmost tip of the African continent is wrestl

  • Merely liberals? Du Bois and Plaatje as radical critics of racial capitalism

Mosa Phadi, Mosa M Phadi•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2023

A wide range of scholars ratified Du Bois’ Black Reconstruction as his radical turn. Prior to its publication, “liberal” was an epithet used in reference to his work. Across the Atlantic, Plaatje’s Native Life invoked his appellation as a “Black Victorian”. As a counter, this article argues that both intellectuals, who were in communication and whose work resonated with each other, understood the historical development of modern capitalism as an …

  • The Economic Freedom Fighters

    Mosa Phadi•ARTICLE•Review of African Political Economy•2020•References: 1

It creates splinters, overlapping and reconstructing how self-determination and social change are envisioned among Black people, especially the working class. The contradictions which often emerge from the discourse and actions of the Economic Freedom Fighte…

Mosa Phadi, Joel Pearson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2018

In this article, we employ an in-depth institutional focus to reassess the state of South Africa’s ‘fragile stability’ under the Zuma administration. We look within a troubled local municipality in Limpopo province in a bid to update the diagnosis proffered by Beall et al. in 2005. This case casts some of the predictions they made in more pessimistic terms. Beall et al. insisted that ‘collapse and social disintegration’ were ‘unlikely’, owing to …

  • The Language of Class

Mosa Phadi, Owen Manda•ARTICLE•Society in Transition•2010

‘Class’ as a word or concept cannot be accurately translated into any of South Africa's indigenous languages. This article explores the relationship that language has with class by analysing responses drawn from a recent research study conducted in Soweto. There were two kinds of responses from a cross-section of Sowetans: a) the meanings which non-English speakers associate with the English word ‘class’, when they themselves recognise and unders…
