  • Computer and quantitative methods in tourism history: Contributions and limitations

    Open Access•Nicolas Chachereau, Cédric Humair•ARTICLE•Mondes du tourisme•2023

Historical research, like other human and social sciences, has been deeply transformed by the digital. This is an obvious observation, even if it might be useful given the fascination, irritation, dread, or indifference that are still commonplace. As far as the materiality of their practices is concerned, historians in 2023 undoubtedly do not work at all as they did in 1990, from accessing scholarly publications online, to researching and collabo…

  • Grasping and understanding the actors of a regional tourism system: The inputs of the Biolemano biographical database (Lake Geneva region, 1852-1914)

Open Access•Cédric Humair, Jan Chiarelli•ARTICLE•Journal of Tourism History•2023

This article highlights the contributions of a biographical database called ‘Biolemano’, which contains information on 1761 tourism players in the Franco-Swiss region of Lake Geneva between 1852 and 1914. The result of more than ten years of research conducted at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland), this digital tool offers innovative research perspectives in the history of tourism by making it possible to grasp the complexity of a regional …

The purpose of this article is to understand why people of the Jewish faith suffered many forms of discrimination in Switzerland between 1848 and 1874. In contradiction with the liberal and secular principles of the Federal state’s designers, certain rights were reserved for the Christian population in the 1848 constitution. An alterity has thus been built within the Swiss nation itself. Removed during the revisions of 1866 and 1874, in response …

  • The hotel in history: Evolving perspectives

    Kevin J James, A K Sandoval‐strausz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Tourism History•2017•Cited by: 5

This discussion draws together six of the leading practitioners of hotel history in order to explore the state of the field and its larger relevance. Together they touch on questions related to imperialism and colonialism, science and technology, transatlantic connections, national distinctiveness (or lack thereof), as well as economic, social and cultural history

Cédric Humair, Sébastien Guex et al.•ARTICLE•Vingtième Siècle Revue d histoire•2012•Cited by: 2

  • The hotel industry and its importance in the technical and economic development of a region: The Lake Geneva case (1852–1914)

    Cédric Humair•ARTICLE•Journal of Tourism History•2011•Cited by: 5

The historiography dedicated to tourism has emphasised how some socio-economic evolutions such as urbanisation, mechanisation of transport or the advent of leisure time in society have supported pleasure trips and therefore the development of the hotel industry. On the contrary, the research has too often neglected or at least minimised the impact of the hotel sector on a region's development. This contribution seeks to fill this gap by analysing…

    Cédric Humair•ARTICLE•Entreprises et histoire•2007•Cited by: 1
