The influence of passenger rail interventions in London on relative deprivation in affected station catchment areas
This paper investigates the relationship between passenger rail interventions in Greater London and deprivation indices in affected station catchment areas. Interventions were selected for study only if they were associated with a significant change in jobs accessibility. It makes use of the difference-in-difference (DiD) research technique to test if these interventions have been associated with improvements in the Index of Multiple Deprivation …
Modelling car dependence: Pathways to sustainable urban mobility
This study investigates car dependence for short trips (travel time ≤ 15 min) using an integrated Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) approach applied to Dutch travel diary data (ODiN 2022). The observed outcome of the present study demonstrates that short trips are associated with lower car dependence (car ownership and frequency of car use), particularly for non-work destinations (e.…
Risk en route: Women’s mobility and exposure to gender-based violence in public spaces in Curitiba, Brazil
Sexual violence against women in public spaces remains a persistent and troubling societal issue. The daily rhythms of people’s routine activities offer important insights into when, where, and who may be most exposed to gender-based violence. This study proposes an exploratory spatio-temporal approach to investigate women’s potential exposure to gender-based violence in public spaces in Curitiba, Brazil, adopting an intersectional perspective th…
Changes in segregation patterns in medium-sized cities in the state of São Paulo between 2000 and 2010
Brazil underwent political and economic changes that led to a reduction in social inequalities between 2000 and 2010. Studies indicated that during the same period, there was an increase in the level of residential segregation in metropolitan spaces, as opposed to a reduction accompanying the inequalities. This paper contributes to this body of studies, by analyzing residential segregation in medium-sized cities, quantitatively and spatially, dur…

Ethno-racial segregation in São Paulo and London metropolitan regions: Reflections on a Comparative Study
This paper analyzes ethno-racial residential segregation in two large metropolitan areas across the Global North and South: London (UK) and São Paulo (Brazil). Residential segregation is measured and mapped using global and local spatial segregation indices that portray different spatial dimensions across scales. To interpret results, the study adopted a relational approach that juxtaposes global figures and local variations of segregation, compl…

Inequalities in transit accessibility: Contributions from a comparative study between Global South and North metropolitan regions
A compact city for the wealthy? Employment accessibility inequalities between occupational classes in the London metropolitan region 2011
Uneven geographies: Exploring the sensitivity of spatial indices of residential segregation
There has been extensive use of segregation indices for measuring residential segregation since 1950s, with continuous progress made in the field. Recent developments include the propositions of spatial global and local versions of traditionally used segregation indices, which have opened avenues for representing and analysing segregation as a multiscale and spatially varying phenomenon. Much less explored has been the issue of how important rese…
Introducing GIS across levels: Designing for diversity
The paper proposes a strategy for designing introductory GIS modules at Birkbeck, University of London. Seven design aspects or elements (content, practical exercises, assessment, pace, mode, level of support, and level of difficulty) for tailoring modules at appropriate levels and for diversity are introduced and their application in Birkbeck’s context discussed. Student’s perceptions on those elements, obtained from surveying a subset of studen…
