Building towards best practice for governments’ public communications in languages other than English: A case study of New South Wales, Australia
Through NSW’s recent run of bushfires and COVID-19, the importance of government communications reaching the whole public has become increasingly obvious. Other Australian governments, and governments worldwide, face similar challenges. Linguistic exclusion from government communications can create real dangers to individuals and communities and push people towards misinformation. It is a fundamental problem for societies founded on principles of…
Tourist tongues: High-speed rail carries linguistic and cultural urbanisation beyond the city limits in Guangxi, China
This article builds upon research which analyses the reconstruction of cities in China as an integral part of image-making discourses competing to attract mobile capital. It extends that literature beyond urban places to urbanisation processes, examining the material and linguistic features of networks and discourses of new high-speed rail infrastructure Guangxi, a poorer, rural, multilingual and multiethnic region of the People’s Republic of Chi…
An audit of NSW legislation and policy on the government’s public communications in languages other than English
This article reports a 2019–2021 audit of the framework of the NSW government's decisions about their public communications in languages other than English (NSW is an Australian state). It found a dearth of legislation or policy about the language of public government communications, but we present a typology of ways in which NSW law seeks to regulate choice of language in other communications between individuals, non-government entities, and gov…
Linguistic diversity as a challenge and an opportunity for improved legal policy
This article introduces this Themed Issue, Linguistic Diversity as a Challenge to Legal Policy, and reports a small, peer-reviewed study of the integration of research about language issues in legal contexts in Australian legal education. The article explains that interdisciplinary law and linguistics research has emerged to better understand potential inequalities and injustices. This research speaks to concerns shared across many legal systems …
New limits on the right to freedom of expression from Hamzy v Commissioner of Corrective Services
This article examines a 2020 NSW Supreme Court judgment upholding the legality of English-only rules for communications by ‘extreme high risk restricted’ prison inmates. The article focuses on the reasoning regarding claims to human rights to freedom of expression and from racial discrimination. It explains that the decision provides a rare insight into problematic Australian judicial thinking about language choice in expression, the intersection…
Language Rights in a Changing China: A National Overview and Zhuang Case Study
China has had constitutional minority language rights for decades, but what do they mean today? Answering with nuance and empirical detail, this book examines the rights through a sociolinguistic study of Zhuang, the language of China's largest minority group. The analysis traces language policy from the Constitution to local government practices, investigating how Zhuang language rights are experienced as opening or restricting socioeconomic opp…
Perceptions of invisible Zhuang minority language in Linguistic Landscapes of the People’s Republic of China andimplications for language policy
The article presents data from a 2013–2019 ethnography of Zhuang language policy to support an analysis of implications for language policy research and scholarship of findings about the (in)visibility of publicly displayed Zhuang. The analysis challenges core assumptions of language policy-making, advocacy and scholarship and explicates the general implications of this challenge beyond China, particularly for minority languages. The most importa…
English as Eastern: Zhuang, Mongolian, Mandarin, and English in the linguistic orders of globalized China
Socially constructed and globally propagated East-West binaries have influenced language ideologies about English in the People's Republic of China (PRC), but they are not hegemonic. This essay explores how East-West language ideologies are reformed in mergers with Mandarin-minority language ideologies. It discusses two separate but similar recent studies of minority language speakers and language ideologies in the PRC, respectively by Grey and B…
Bringing linguistic research into legal scholarship and practice
This article suggests a cohesive articulation of the shared basis upon which the interdisciplinary research field of law and linguistics is developing, organising the research around the familiar three branches of the state: legislature, executive and judiciary, thus providing a map oriented towards non-linguists and legal practitioners. It also invites interdisciplinary scholars to critically reflect on future directions for this research area. …

La politique sociale, l'amélioration des capabilités et la perspective du parcours de vie

Il explore ensuite comment la perspective du parcours de vie peut permettre d'aborder deux des principaux défis analy…
Ferenczi and the interpersonal school: A study of political climates in psychoanalysis
Ferenczi and Sullivan developed many similar clinical ideas but the historical evidence indicates that essentially they were developed independently and rested on very different theoretical premises. This conclusion runs counter to the current ideology of ecumenism which blurs intellectual differences. The history of American psychoanalytic thought can be divided into three phases: the first one of purification (until about 1970), the second of a…
Individuality, conformity and collective identity
Distinctions are made between defensive, expressive, and affiliative conformity. Although all forms of conformity play significant roles in the shaping of identity, both for good and for ill, their negative influence has received most of the attention in contemporary psychoanalytic thought. A treatment history is presented here to illustrate the constructive possibilities sometimes realized through expression of affiliative conformity

Cultural and Sex Differences in the Sex Distribution of Dream Characters
The validity of previous reports regarding sex differences in ratio of male characters in dreams was investigated. Eight dreams were obtained for each of 192 college students in Lima, Peru, and New York City. Odd-even reliabilities for male dream characters ranged from .36 to .72. U.S. subjects had a higher percentage of male dream characters than Peruvians (p <.01). U.S. males had a greater percentage of men in their dreams than U.S. females; in…
Oedipus East and West: An Exploration Via Manifest Dream Content
The frequency of opposite-sex figures in the dreams of 45 female and 51 male Indian university students is found to vary in relation to cultural and subcultural factors. When compared with a large sample of American dreams, the gender-counts of Indian dream-characters is found to differ significantly in a direction explainable by the greater sexual segregation in India. Moreover, when the sex ratio of dream characters for all subjects are correla…
