  • Rituals of Legitimacy: Caste/Hegemony/Counter-Hegemony, c. 1800–1940

Biswamoy Pati•CHAPTER•Tribals and Dalits in Orissa•2018

This chapter looks at the way in which colonial and the feudal ruling classes ritualized diverse aspects related to their interactions with the common people in order to tap their resources, while also simultaneously exercising control over them. Keeping the question of ‘Hinduization’ and Sanskritization at the centre, it highlights the manner in which the pre-existing system of caste was ritualized using a diverse range of strategies. At the sam…

Open Access•Biswamoy Pati•ARTICLE•History and Sociology of South Asia•2011•Cited by: 2

This article explores the diversities involved with the process of power and legitimacy and highlights its interactive and dynamic characteristics. What is rather well known is the way the colonial state and the internal ruling classes (viz., princes and zamindars) devised rituals to legitimise their rule. Thus, these ranged from the associations that were sought to be established with ‘cults’, myths and caste to practices involving complex, ritu…

  • The order of legitimacy

    Biswamoy Pati•CHAPTER•India's Princely States•2007

British colonialism was a very powerful legitimizer of the princely states over the 1850–1947 period. Stung by the 1857 Rebellion, the colonial government sought to improve its links with the Indian rulers after the British crown took over India in 1858. 1 Conversely, in the case of Orissa, colonialism itself was being legitimized by the rulers, who were its pillars of support in large tracts, inhabited by diverse people. This process of legitima…

  • Interrogating Stereotypes: Exploring the Princely States in Colonial Orissa

    Open Access•Biswamoy Pati•ARTICLE•South Asia Research•2005

This article lays foundations for further critical examination of the problems of exploitation created by a feudal system that rested in the lap of colonialism and has been romanticized and even depicted as ‘modern’. It indicates that the despotic rule of the princely states of Orissa under British colonial alliances impacted heavily upon the day-to-day lives of common people and led to protest movements. This is only discovered if one rebalances…
