  • Body, in Interaction

    Open Access•Paul Bouissac•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2020

From arctic to tropical climates, on land and sea, the human body must meet numerous challenges, both physical and social, to survive and reproduce in an environment defined by the laws of gravity and evolution. As a social organism, the human primate develops and matures through a dense net of interactions with other humans and animals. The evolution of tool making provided the body with extensions that helped humans to successfully mediate thes…

Paul Bouissac Punctum, 2(2): 14-23, 2016 DOI: 10.18680/hss.2016.0012 Abstract This article addresses the challenges of engaging in ethno-semiotics research of circus performances and provides an example to illustrate the methodological strategy that is proposed. • Semiotics as the science of memory

    Open Access•Paul Bouissac•ARTICLE•Sign Systems Studies•2007•Cited by: 4•References: 1

The notion of culture implies the relative stability of sets of algorithms that become entrenched in human brains as children become socialized, and, to a lesser extent, when immigrants become assimilated into a new society. The semiotics of culture has used the notion of signs and systems of signs to conceptualize this process, which takes for granted memory as a natural affordance of the brain without raising the question of how and why cultura…

  • Gesture in evolutionary perspective

    Paul Bouissac•ARTICLE•Gesture•2006

Gesture is mostly a function of the upper limbs of Homo sapiens and is constrained by the skeleton and neuromuscular apparatus which have evolved under the selection pressures of arboreal environments. This article raises the issue of the early adaptations which determined the range of movements which made possible the emergence of gesture both technical and cultural. It addresses the problem of explaining in evolutionary terms the multi-function…

  • On signs, memes and Mems: Toward evolutionary ecosemiotics

    Open Access•Paul Bouissac•ARTICLE•Sign Systems Studies•2001•Cited by: 3

The first issue raised by this paper is whether semiotics can bring any added value to ecology. A brief examination of the epistemological status of semiotics in its current forms suggests that semiotics' phenomenological macroconcepts are incommensurate with the complexity of the sciences comprising ecology and are too reductive to usefully map the microprocesses through which organisms evolve and interact. However, there are at least two ground…

  • Converging Parallels: Semiotics and Psychology in Evolutionary Perspective

    Open Access•Paul Bouissac•ARTICLE•Theory & Psychology•1998

This paper examines the interface between semiotics and psychology, first from the historical point of view of their parallel developments originating in late 18th-century philosophy, then from the theoretical perspective of contemporary evolutionary thinking. Undifferentiated within the speculations of the French `Idéologues', such as Destutt de Tracy (1754-1836), semiotics and psychology progressively acquired distinct epistemological and insti…
