Racism Data in Australia: A Review of Quantitative Studies and Directions for Future Research
There are growing public discussions about racism in Australia with renewed government commitment to addressing it. Robust evidence and high-quality data are important for informing anti-racism. However, current data have serious limitations that impact our knowledge about the nature, prevalence and impact of racism in Australia. To examine the state and limitations of data on racism in Australia, we conducted a stocktake review of quantitative r…
Racism and health and wellbeing among children and youth–An updated systematic review and meta-analysis
“We still have a lot to learn”: Non-Indigenous educator perspectives on teaching Indigenous health
Internationally many health professions courses require the inclusion of Indigenous health curricula and skilled educators are vital to achieving this. In this Australian qualitative study, 20 non-Indigenous nursing and allied health educators teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s health were interviewed on perspectives of teaching Indigenous health. Inductive thematic analysis identified three areas relating to perceptions of w…
Domestic/Family Homicide: A Systematic Review of Empirical Evidence
Background: Domestic/family homicide (D/FH) is a global social, economic and public health problem. To date, the research studies into risk factors associated with D/FH has largely focused on intimate partner homicide (IPH). A more contemporary approach recognizes that D/FH extends beyond the intimate partner relationship. This systematic review sought to identify and quantify the individual, relationship, community and societal factors in the em…
A review of the model minority myth: Understanding the social, educational and health impacts
As shown by the recent increase in anti-Asian racism and violence worldwide, the label of “model minority” is flawed and fails to capture the breadth and depth of the experiences of Asian people. Our paper is the first to provide a scoping review of empirical research (ninety-seven studies) that examine the social, educational and health and wellbeing impacts of the model minority myth (MMM) for people of Asian descent in white-majority countries…
Employee perceptions of race and racism in an Australian hospital
The lack of accurate understanding of the concept of race and racism likely contributes to the relatively poor effect of current strategies to combat racism. As an initial part of deeper systemic anti-racist reform, this research supports calls for anti-racist education to clarify the definition of racism as an ideology
Attitudes and beliefs about family and domestic violence in faith‐based communities: An exploratory qualitative study
Family and domestic violence (FDV) is a major social, economic and health issue that is associated with a range of physical, mental and behavioural health outcomes. Religion and faith are powerful and influential in shaping the lives of many individuals and societies, in addition to the social practices, norms and structures that are significant in understanding and responding to FDV. This study examines the influence of religious beliefs and val…
Racism and Structural Violence: Interconnected Threats to Health Equity
In 2020, the continuing murder of Black Americans by police officers received widespread media attention and sparked global outrage. Public health responses to these events focused on discrimination by police and structural racism in broader society. However, police violence is but one of many forms of racialized violence propagated by structural racism and anti-Black racism in particular. We aim to expand the current public health dialogue by de…
Social Patterning of Racial Discrimination Among a Diverse Sample of School-Aged Children in Australia
The association between experiences of religious discrimination, social-emotional and sleep outcomes among youth in Australia
Religious discrimination is an understudied form of social disadvantage that has implications for adolescents' development, health and well-being. Conclusion: More programs, particularly in the school-context, address religious-based discrimination may reduce inequities in health
Promoting proactive bystander responses to racism and racial discrimination in primary schools: A mixed methods evaluation of the ‘Speak Out Against Racism’ program pilot
This study provides quantitative evidence of the potential of the SOAR program to improve the prosocial skills of students and their perceptions of the inter-racial school climate provided by their teachers. This program also provided qualitative evidence of the potential to promote teacher and student attitudinal and behavioural change. Further refinement and testing of the program in a large scale implementation trial is recommended
Recovery from conflict and revival of intimacy in cohabiting couples
Couples who seek a stable and satisfying relationship must recover emotionally and reestablish their intimate connection after their conflicts are over. In a 3‐week diary study, 100 cohabiting couples reported on their daily moods, intimacy, relationship satisfaction, and conflicts. Results indicated that on days following a conflict, couple partners have worse mood, less satisfaction, and less self‐disclosure than on other days. Attachment secur…
