  • Genetic relatedness, social status and cemetery organisation: The Xiongnu Tamir necropolis, Mongolia

Open Access•Ameline Alcouffe, Sylvie Duchesne et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2026

Archaeologists are increasingly integrating the analysis of ancient DNA into cemetery studies; however, while such efforts highlight relatedness and descent, biological kinship forms only one aspect of social organisation in human societies. Here, the authors demonstrate this using the Tamir necropolis in Mongolia (100 BC–AD 100) as a case study. Employing a pipeline that combines linear discriminant analysis, machine-learning classifiers and cul…

  • From Stars to State: Astral Patterns and the Rise of Pharaonic Egypt at Adaïma (Upper Egypt)

Open Access•Ameline Alcouffe, Duchesne et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Method…•2025•References: 4

This article examines the role of rural communities in shaping early Egyptian statehood through the evolution of funerary beliefs. Drawing on the analysis of 504 tombs from the cemetery of Adaïma (Upper Egypt, 3300–2700 BCE), we trace a growing variability in mortuary practices from the First to the Third Dynasty. By the Third Dynasty, a remarkable alignment between the heliacal rising of Sirius, the summer solstice, and the Nile inundation began…

  • Frozen graves of Yakutia, a chronological sequence

    Open Access•Duchesne, Sylvie Duchesne et al.•ARTICLE•Vestnik arheologii, antropologii…•2020•References: 3

Distribution, cultural and chronological attribution of frozen graves of Yakutia between the beginning of 17th and end of 19th century. The funerary rites and the artefacts allow to differentiate four chrono-cultural periods (before 1700 AD, from 1700 to 1750 AD, from 1750 to 1800 AD and after 1800 AD) which could be associated with historical events: opening of the trading post of Nertchinsk, expansion of the Kangalasky clan, economic collapse, …

  • Yakut clothes of the 17th and 18th centuries, archaeology and restitution

    Open Access•Ch Hochstrasser-Petit, L Romanova et al.•ARTICLE•Vestnik arheologii, antropologii…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 2

40 frozen yakutian graves, from the 17th to the 19th century allow the reconstitution of clothes. At the end of the 17th century, new fashions are emerging with the ostentatious use of imported goods and the influences of Russian noble circles and Chinese and/or Mongol and/or Buriat fashions. The garment does not only seem to be any more an element of protection against the cold and a utilitarian object but becomes a way to marking the so-cializa…
