  • A Cross-sectional Study on the Prevalence of Obesity in Three Endogamous Populations of Andhra Pradesh

    Open Access•P Venkatramana•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•2022

To investigate and compare the prevalence of different types of obesity, the researchers recruited the Reddy, Golla, and Madiga caste populations of Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh. Three hundred participants were included from each caste in this cross-sectional study. The researchers found a significantly higher prevalence of obesity (general, abdominal, and combined obesity) in women than in men (p<0.05). Golla showed a significantly higher p…

  • Prevalence and Predictors of Hypertension in an Ethnic Population of South India

    Open Access•P Chandrasekhar Rao, P Venkatramana et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropologist•2013

The present study investigated the incidence and predictors of hypertension in the Mala community from rural areas of Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, South India. A sample of 286 subjects comprising 139 male and 147 female aged 20-70 years was drawn randomly. Blood pressure was recorded with sphygmomanometer in the right arm in sitting position after a rest period of five minutes. Details on age, sex, family history, smoking and alcohol inta…

  • Microsatellite Diversity in Andhra Pradesh, India: Genetic Stratification Versus Social Stratification

    B Mohan Reddy, Vegi M Naidu et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2005•Cited by: 6•References: 10

DNA samples of 948 individuals belonging to 27 populations from southern Andhra Pradesh were analyzed for nine AmpFlSTR Profiler Plus loci. The nature and extent of genomic diversity within and between these populations have been examined with reference to socioeconomic and geographic affiliations. The results suggest that the average heterozygosity is uniformly high in these populations (>0.80) and that the patterns of allele distributions are s…

  • Second to fourth digit ratio: Ethnic differences and family size in English, Indian and South African populations

Open Access•John T Manning, Peter Henzi et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2003

2D:4D showed weak sex and strong ethnic differences. Low values of 2D:4D were associated with large family size in men. The situation was less clear in women but on balance there was evidence to support a relationship between high values of 2D:4D and large family size

  • Association of Body Mass Index, Body Fat Distribution and Fat Patterning with Blood Pressure in Two Populations of Andhra Pradesh

Open Access•P Venkatramana, C Geetha Vani et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•2001

The association of systolic and diastolic blood pressures with body mass index, waist-hip ratio, conicity index, the sum of the three trunk skinfolds, the sum of the six skinfolds, the ratio of the sum of the trunk to the sum of the extremity skinfolds and relative fat pattern index and the correlations between each of these were examined among 209 and 204 adults of the Reddi and the Mala populations, respectively of Andhra Pradesh, India The cor…

  • An Estimation of Per Cent Body Fat from Triceps Skin Fold Thickness in the Malasof Andhra Pradesh

    Open Access•P Venkatramana, P Chengal Reddy•ARTICLE•The Anthropologist•2000

The data on Triceps skin fold thickness were collected from the Malas of Chittoor and Madanapalle taluks of southern Andhra Pradesh. From these data, specific gravity and percent body fat were calculated. In all these variables, females showed slightly higher values than males. Both sexes of the Malas of Chitto or taluk showed higher values than of Madanapalle taluk. The mean values of tricepssk in fold thickness and percent body fat showed highe…

  • A Note on the Origin of Jettis of Andhra Pradesh

    Open Access•P Venkatramana, K B Hari Prasad et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropologist•2000

The blood and saliva samples were analysed for ABO, Rh (D) blood groups and secretor factor on 191 subjects of the jetties of Nellore and Chittoor districts of Andhra Pradesh. The present data were c ompared with the data available on the Rajputs and the Jats of north India to test the validity of the information ab out the origin of the Jettis. Based on these data, it is not possible to throw light on the origin of the Jettis either from the Raj…

  • ABO and Rh (D) Blood Groups among the Pattapu – A Marine Fishing Community of Andhra Pradesh

Open Access•A Papa Rao, Ch Venkateswarlu et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropologist•1999

The incidence of blood groups ABO and Rhesus has been reported in 132 unrelated individuals of Pattapu, a marine fishing community of Nellore District of coastal Andhra Pradesh. The blood group O was observed with highest frequency (46%) followed by B (30%), A (22%) and the AB (2%). The distribution of allele frequencies of the blood groups among the Pattapu population showed similarities with other caste populations of Andhra Pradesh

  • An Epidemiological Study of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors

    Open Access•P Venkatramana, P Chengal Reddy•ARTICLE•The Anthropologist•1999

Coventry heart disease (CHD) is the largest killer in the developed countries and is rapidly assuming a similar trend in developing countries. The prevalence of this disease and its associated risk factors are more in urban setting than in rural areas. To determine the urban-rural differences of various risk factors, a population based study was conducted among males of Reddis, an endogamous population of Andhra Pradesh. A total of 110 and 102 ma…

  • Commingling and segregation analysis of blood pressure in consanguineous and nonconsanguineous families from Andhra Pradesh, India

Open Access•A Nirmala, Treva Rice et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1992

The hypothesis of a major gene effect for systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was examined in families from Andhra Pradesh, India, where consanguinity and marriage within caste are commonly practiced. The data were examined separately by noninbred versus complete (inbred + noninbred) families, both before and after correction for residual skewness. For SBP in the noninbred sample prior to skewness transformation, evid…
