  • This machine kills fascists”: Music, joy, resistance

    Brian E Kumm, Joseph A Pate•ARTICLE•Leisure Studies•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 16

Within this article we move amongst the varied relationships between music, feeling, and politics. We begin by exploring differences and interrelations between affect and emotion to forward a conception of joy as the intensification of life capacities. We then locate joy in music and draw from various musical artists, poets, and activists to advance a modest programme of joy as a form of micropolitics. Ultimately, the focus of this article is an …

  • The Future is Unwritten: Listening to the Rhythms of Covid-19

    Brian E Kumm, Joseph A Pate et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2021•References: 10

This article asks us to listen critically to the rhythms of our time. COVID-19 has altered the pace and tempo of contemporary life; however, rhythm asks that we engage our moment in ways that account for the seismic shifts in how we live, how we teach and how we learn. We call leisure scholars to listen to the rhythms of our current pandemic, to consider how rhythm may suspend pace, tempo and meter to open space for a reparative leisure and criti…

  • On Methods: “The Situation’s in Control”

    Joseph A Pate, Brian E Kumm•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2021•References: 21

The situation is always, already in control. Drawing inspiration from jam bands and artists such as Bill Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead, this article leverages “jamming” as a way to playfully and improvisationally engage leisure research. Further, we emphasize how improvizational practices can be both affirmative and generative, enhancing research aims. In the situational dynamics between researcher, participants, and phenomenon, we illustrate h…

  • Joyful Digressions: Going Gonzo

    Open Access•Brian E Kumm, Joseph A Pate•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Within this article, we attempt to counter the seriousness that sometimes tends to weigh down academic pursuits. Although we acknowledge the necessary anchors that tether us to various obligations in our work, we enact a form of play that emerged over the course of our dissertations and extended into our budding careers. We call this form "going Gonzo." By recounting the emergence of trickster figure within our work-who we simply call "Phillip"-w…

  • Existential disturbances: The beginnings of leisure

    Brian E Kumm, Joseph A Pate•ARTICLE•World Leisure & Recreation•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 3

The purpose of this article is to contend with, not answer, a question related to happiness. Specifically, we are interested in whether leisure and happiness are possible when feelings stand in stark contrast to those conventionally associated with these terms. Is leisure or happiness possible when one is existentially shaken or disturbed? We contend that it is; that existential disturbances may be necessary as a beginning for leisure, which can …

  • Sympathetic chords: Reverberating connection through the lived leisure experiences of music listening

Joseph A Pate, Charles Wm Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2013

Informed by a larger post-intentional phenomenology on those who self-disclose deep and significant experiences of connection with and through music listening, this work highlights glimpses and manifestations of the listening act. Interviews with one participant from a larger study afford insights into experiences of a music listener. Philip described moments of resonating and reverberating connection expressed through the manifestations of embod…
