  • Volcanic Activity on the Patagonian Ice Cap

    Eric Shipton•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1960

The main purpose of my second visit to Patagonia in the summer of 1959-60 was to locate and investigate an active vent, which was believed to exist somewhere on the southern of the two main ice caps. The evidence that there was such a vent had accumulated over very many years. For example, nearly fifty years ago some travellers had described showers of ash falling near the western end of Lago Viedma; deposits of ejecta had been observed on the O'…

  • Explorations in Patagonia

    Eric Shipton•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1959•Cited by: 1

No one with a taste for strange country can fail to be impressed by the remark? able geography of the Andes of Southern Patagonia: the labyrinth of fjords which split the Chilean coast and bite deep into the mainland; the curiously similar pattern of lakes on the opposite side, many of which, Lagos San Martin and Buenos Aires for example, though lying well to the east of the main range, are drained by rivers flowing through it into the Pacific; t…

    Eric Shipton•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1955

The classic phase (1921-1924) of the long series of attempts to climb Mount Everest i dominated by the names of three m n: Mallory, Norton and Somervell. Nothing that has occurred in the subsequent history of the attempts can dim the memory of their achievements, and, indeed, in terms of courage, determination and endurance, it would be hard to find a parallel to their exploits. When, in May 1922, they made the first attempt to reach the summit, …

  • The Expedition to Cho Oyu

    Eric Shipton•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1953•Cited by: 1

When we returned to England in December 1951 with the information that there was a practicable route up the southern side of Mount Everest, it was thought that this discovery would be followed immediately by a British attempt to climb the mountain by that route in the Spring of 1952. However, it was found that the Swiss had made a previous application to the Govern? ment of Nepal for permission to send an expedition for that purpose, and that the…

MOUNTAINEERS will have been interested to learn that the Survey of India is now engaged on a new half-inch survey of the mountain regions of Kumaon and Garhwal. Previous surveys, as produced on the present Vinch sheets 53 N and 62 B, had been confined almost entirely to the populated and revenue-producing areas in or near to the great arterial valleys. Most of the glacier-covered country and the remoter valleys of these sheets are very sketchily …
