Examination of the postmortem alteration of dental enamel – combined analytical approaches and pre-treatment method standardisation
Oxygen isotope (δ 18 O) analysis of carbonate-bearing hydroxyapatite from human dental enamel is widely used in archaeological studies because it reflects the isotopic composition of ingested water. However, certain postmortem alteration processes may affect the δ 18 O signatures of the carbonate (δ 18 O c ) and/or the phosphate (δ 18 O p ) components. This study investigates the diagenetic changes to human dental enamel samples from two Hungaria…
A speleothem record of seasonality and moisture transport around the 8.2 ka event in Central Europe (Vacska Cave, Hungary)
A stalagmite was collected in northern Hungary from the Vacska Cave, where monitoring and ventilation-based site selection had been conducted. The stalagmite covers the 10–8 ka (relative to AD 1950) period, including the so-called 8.2 ka event, and showed preceding signs of climate change that were evaluated by petrographic observations, 14 C activities, Sr concentrations, and stable isotope compositions of calcite and inclusion-hosted water. Com…
Provenance groups in a Roman jet jewelry collection at Aquincum (Budapest, Hungary) and comparison with jet and jet-like gemstones
Jet and jet-like gemstones are found in graves from the Neolithic, but they became particularly popular during the Bronze Age and the Roman period. To discover their provenance, several techniques were used to determine distinctions between organic materials and occurrences. The present study utilized a combination of Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopic (FTIR) and stable isotope ratio analyses to compare a unique Copper Age black bead („Lell…
Extracted samples and in situ soil investigations to assess the effects of different land use and tillage management practices on soil organic matter composition
The effects of land use change on soil organic carbon (SOC) content have been investigated extensively. However, little research has been conducted on how soil organic matter (SOM) chemistry changes under different land use management practices, particularly with different soil cultivation methods. Thus, in this study, we compared the effects of various land use management practices, including six medium‐term tillage practices, namely no‐tillage …
Detection of diagenetic alteration in bones and teeth for migration and dietary studies - a combined FTIR and C-N-O-Sr isotope study on tenth century CE cemeteries in northern and northeastern Hungary
Stable isotope-based dietary information on the tenth century CE Hungarian population serves as a valuable comparative tool to other dietary stable isotope studies in the region. This study presents a multiproxy approach involving skeletal samples with the least diagenetic alteration and the best-preserved primary signals. Dental and bone samples collected from three cemeteries in northeastern Hungary were investigated using a combination of Four…
Natural and anthropogenic impacts reflected by paleoclimate proxy parameters in a lake-forest system in Bukovina, Romania
The research area is located in the Eastern Carpathians, Romania. This region is rich in various formations and indicates significant potential for paleo-environmental reconstruction. The present research was carried out on sediment cores collected at lake Bolătău-Feredeu, Feredeului Mountains (Eastern Carpathians, Romania). Preliminary examination of the sediment confirmed the possibility for data analysis with high temporal resolution. The aim …
Sedimentological-Geochemical Data Based Reconstruction of Climate Changes and Human Impacts from the Peat Sequence of Round Lake in the Western Foothill Area of the Eastern Carpathians, Romania
This paper presents the results of comparative sedimentological and geochemical analysis of the mire at Sânpaul, Round Lake (Kerek-tó). The palaeoecological site is situated in the western foothill area of the Eastern Carpathians in Romania. The primary objective of this study was to analyse the accumulation of major and trace elements in a 7500 year-long peat and lake deposition. The concentrations of 13 elements were determined by using handhel…
Natural and anthropogenic changes in a lake-forest system in Bukovina (Romania) since 1340 AD documented by sedimentary organic geochemistry (C, N and n-alkanes)
