Tackling Social Inequality in the City of Porto, Northern Portugal: Grassroots Horticultural Practices and the Desired City
Grassroots urban horticultural plots (hortas), part of the Porto Metropolitan Area in Northern Portugal, are presented as liminal spaces that hold a richness of community life and a “gift economy.” Often in existence for several decades and encompassing groups of over 20 or 30 people, these informal communities are, nevertheless, not cherished by the instances of city governance that do not stand in the way of the destruction of these low‐income …
Tourism Imaginaries: Anthropological Approaches
It is hard to imagine tourism without the creative use of seductive, as well as restrictive, imaginaries about peoples and places. These socially shared assemblages are collaboratively produced and consumed by a diverse range of actors around the globe. As a nexus of social practices through which individuals and groups establish places and peoples as credible objects of tourism, “tourism imaginaries” have yet to be fully explored. Presenting inn…
The Imagined Nation: The Mystery of the Endurance of the Colonial Imaginary in Postcolonial Times
Bringing Slavery into the Light in Postcolonial Portugal: The rhetoric and poetics of a slavery exhibition
In 2009, in Lagos, Portugal, the remains of 158 bodies of fifteenth-century enslaved Africans were unearthed. In 2016, Lagos City Council inaugurated a slavery-themed exhibition in collaboration with the Portuguese Committee of UNESCO’s Slave Route Project. Through an analysis of the exhibition’s rhetoric and poetics, I argue that the former is yet another instance of Lusotropicalism, a theoretical construct developed by Gilberto Freyre throughou…
Tourism and the critical cosmopolitanism imagination: The Worst Tours’ in a European World Heritage city
With its old core classified as a World Heritage Site since 1996, Porto has recently been experiencing a tourism boom. Voted ‘Best European Destination’ of the year three times since 2012, this mid-size city core area is experiencing an economic renewal after decades of neglect. Many of the new ventures are tourism-orientated: restaurants, bars, hostels, short stay apartments and specialised crafts shops are populating previously derelict eightee…
The concept of 'first-place' as an Aristotelean exercise on the Metaphysics of Heritage
A hyperreal first-place: Portugal dos Pequenitostheme park and the narrative of origins
This article analyses a nation-theme park in Portugal. Located in Coimbra and built in the 1940s, when Portugal was a colonial empire and was under the rule of a right wing dictatorship, the park was designed as a pedagogical device for children to learn about the nation. In the park, the whole of the nation was represented by miniature replicas of buildings representing European Portugal and its overseas territories. Seventy-five years after its…
The Other in Us: Representation of Black African Identity in Portuguese Social Space
This paper brings together three sites of contemporary Portugal to search for the commonality in how black African identity is imagined and represented in Portuguese social space: a 1940s Nation-as-Empire theme park (Coimbra, central Portugal), a sixteenth-century black African slave burial site (Lagos, southern Portugal), and the present-day Alfragide police station (Lisbon metropolitan area). I argue that the three sites and subject matters, al…
Crossed gazes over an old city: Photography and the 'Experientiation' of a heritage place
The paper analyses a group of photographs of the old city of Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The photograph is used as a medium to elicit the ways different social agents experience and relate to Old Porto as a heritage place. The photographs were collected as part of a wider research project on the way sense of place of Porto's old city was differentially constructed by local inhabitants, tourists and the City Council. Illustrated postcards…

The power of knowledge: Tourism and the production of heritage in Porto's old city
The paper analyses the relationship between the material world of heritage of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the immaterial realm there located (the social worlds inhabiting the referred-to place) in a particular city: Porto, Portugal. It will do so by presenting a study carried out on pedestrian guided tours of Porto's Old City. The argument put forward is that these guided tours, which are run by professional historians and attended by Portug…
