  • Why Some Shoppable Ads Persuade

Alice Ji, Michelle R Nelson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Advertising Research•2026

Shoppable ads collapse sales funnels by enabling purchases within media platforms. Guided by Expectancy Violation Theory, Study 1 interviews showed shoppable ads often violated viewers’ expectations, eliciting positive (informativeness, convenience) and negative (intrusiveness, disruption) appraisals. Study 2 introduced the MAVEN framework to test how media motivations, cognitive appraisals, and advertising value shape ad evaluations across strea…

  • Reconsidering Ad Design Practices and Visual Aesthetics in Social Media Interactive Spaces

Olga Shabalina, Michelle R Nelson•ARTICLE•Journal of Interactive Advertising•2025

Media shape the way ads are designed and aesthetically appreciated. While advertising design is well studied in traditional print media, less attention has been paid to its changing nature, visual design aesthetics, and design practices in social media. Drawing on the larger area of advertising aesthetics, we conduct semi-structured interviews with content creators to fill this gap. The interview findings revealed the transitional nature of adver…

  • Navigating digital health solutions across organizations in the context of care transitions

Open Access•Terence Tang, Carolyn Steele Gray et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Background: Integrated care solutions often require the use of digital tools to support information sharing, communication, collaboration, and patient engagement. Implementing digital tools at different organizations and settings require thoughtfully considering how novel tools may interact with existing technology and workflows. Using a multi-site digitally enabled care transition intervention as a case example, we present an approach of how to …

  • Eco-Mapping Considerations for Informing Integrated Systems and Services

Open Access•Marianne Saragosa, Hardeep Singh et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Eco-mapping considerations for strengthening integrated systems and health services are essential in designing and implementing efficient and effective health systems and services. This may require health services to understand and have the ability to intervene at an individual and/or community level to address people's complex health and social issues. This is imperative in meeting people’s multidimensional needs, which underlies the gap between…

  • Developing a Conceptual Model of Compassion in Healthcare Transitions

Open Access•Sarah Munce, Robert Simpson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Compassion stands as a fundamental element in pediatric healthcare. Compassionate care is critical in delivering treatments and also in shaping the holistic experience of patients and their families. Yet, a unified understanding of what constitutes compassion from the perspectives and preferences of pediatric patients and their families is unknown. In particular, the significance of compassionate care during transitions from pediatric to adult he…

As the media industry employs big data to imagine audiences, audiences simultaneously seek to understand how their digital traces are being converted into audience data to inform the industry. We explore how fans map stakeholders in the Chinese idol industry, perceive stakeholders’ utilization and construction of audience data, and use those perceptions to guide their data-driven practices. We conducted a netnography of INTO1’s fandoms as a case …

  • “Metaverse” Typology Based on Affordances and Psychological Processes

Chen Crystal Chen, Michelle R Nelson•ARTICLE•Journal of Interactive Advertising•2024

The metaverse is an emerging phenomenon that lacks a widely accepted academic definition. Previous attempts have primarily focused on a technological perspective, ignoring the user perspective that is central in advertising research. However, the metaverse provides fast-changing updates and dynamic interactions, allowing users to actively engage in content creation. A typology using affordances and psychological processes as dimensions bridges th…

  • Accessibility and Age

    Michelle R Nelson, Kirby Cook•ARTICLE•Journal of Advertising•2024

Inclusive design considers usability first: to design with the needs of everyone to decrease the mismatch between the end-user and the design object. In advertising, the mismatch may be in the opportunity to process an advertisement due to design strategies (i.e., executional ad cues). Based on the Motivation-Opportunity-Ability model of information processing, we focus on legibility as an important but underexplored encoding issue that can enhan…

  • Exploring the process of remote enculturation through heritage possessions

    Open Access•Kirby Cook, Kirby M L Cook et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consumer Culture•2024•Referencias: 8

We bring remote enculturation, the process of learning about one’s heritage culture from afar, to the consumption literature. Past research has predominantly explored acculturation, the psychological change as a result of cultural contact, finding that possessions take on important roles as tangible artifacts of cultural experience or identity from heritage or host cultures, without acknowledging the enculturation process. We present a case study…

METHODS: A series of eight focus groups, including 41 participants, were conducted in primarily Black communities. The Nominal Group Technique (NGT) was used to determine perceptions of COVID-19 as a disease, access to testing, and barriers limi…

  • Food Promotion and Children's Health

Open Access•Charlene Elliott, Emily Truman et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Food marketing to children is ubiquitous and persuasive. It primarily promotes foods of poor nutritional quality, influences children's food preferences and habits, and is a factor in childhood obesity. Given that food marketing relentlessly targets children in traditional/digital media and the built environment, children need critical media literacy skills that build their understanding of food marketing's persuasive effects. However, little res…

  • How Political Interest and Gender Influence Persuasion Knowledge, Political Information Seeking, and Support for Regulation of Political Advertising in Social Media

Michelle R Nelson, Chang-Dae Ham et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Interactive Advertising•2021

Political advertising in the United States is regulated differently from commercial advertising, and regulations vary by media. The relative lack of regulations on social media has led to the dissemination of false information, often without source disclosure, which is harmful to democracy. In response, in a self-regulatory capacity, Twitter stopped accepting political advertising in 2019, launching a debate over political advertising regulation.…

In particular, this research examines downshifting attitudes among members of freecycle.org, a grassroots “gift economy” community.…

They contend that the personal needs emphasized by product-saturated mass media diminish civic-mindedness by creating an individualistic consumption-oriented culture. Despite this critique, some scholars argue that mass media do not erode civic culture in favor of consumer culture; rather, the two are thought to be …
