  • The borderscape of Punta Tarifa: Concurrent invisibilisation practices at Europe’s ultimate peninsula

    Open Access•Xavier Ferrer-Gallardo, Xavier Ferrer‐gallardo et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Geographies•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 1

This contribution aims to provide a cultural–geographical reading of the borderscape of Punta Tarifa: the southernmost point of so-called continental Europe and a key site vis-a-vis material and representational Euro-African (dis)connections. It is argued that Punta Tarifa harbours a complex process of symbolic and functional invisibilisation that turns this border landscape into a highly significant scenario within the ongoing European Union bor…

  • EU-Limboscapes: Ceuta and the proliferation of migrant detention spaces across the European Union

    Open Access•Xavier Ferrer-Gallardo, Xavier Ferrer‐gallardo et al.•ARTICLE•European Urban and Regional Studies•2013•Cited by: 14•References: 3

This Euro-commentary puts the lens on the European Union (EU) North-African city of Ceuta. In so doing, it introduces the notion of EU limboscapes. In the 1990s and early 2000s the iconic twin-metal fencing of Ceuta’s borders added powerful visual strength to the metaphorical Fortress Europe. Today, Ceuta is still (or even more) central when it comes to the conceptual understanding of the socio-spatial articulation of the EU project vis-à-vis mig…

  • Three Gods, Two Shores, One Space: Religious Justifications for Tolerance and Confrontation between Spain and Colonial Morocco during the Franco Era

    Abel Albet-Mas•ARTICLE•Geopolitics•2006•Cited by: 4

The religious factor may be the element in which the ambiguity of the Spanish colonialist relationship to its North African Moroccan neighbour is the strongest and most evident. Despite the fact that the image of “the Muslim” historically and socially remains that of the barbarous infidel either to be baptised or eliminated, under Franco's regime (1939–1975) the official message established sufficient points of contact to suggest potential bonds …

  • Voices from the Margins: Gendered images of ‘Otherness’ in colonial Morocco

    Maria Dolors García Ramón, Maria-Dolors Garcia-Ramon et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Place & Culture•1998•Cited by: 10

The main goal of this essay is to study a book- El Marroc sensual i fanatic - of travel writings written by a Catalan woman traveller, and to put it within the context of the recent scholarship that relates, on the one hand, travel narrative with Orientalism and gender and, on the other, geography and colonialism. The contradictory nature of the contents of the book leads us to challenge the notion of simple 'Othering' as presented in Said's work…
