Eventful migration and intercultural self-formation
This article examines how returned Indonesian female migrant domestic workers retrospectively interpret the intercultural encounters they experienced during overseas employment. Drawing on qualitative interviews with 24 returnees from Cilacap, Indonesia, it explores how some encounters came to be understood as ethically significant after migration rather than merely as instances of cultural adaptation. Guided by Alain Badiou’s concept of the even…
Being Non-Religious in a Godly Society—Respect and the Negotiation of Social Relations in Indonesia
This article examines the life of an atheist Chinese Indonesian living in a society where citizens are expected, both legally and socially, to profess belief in God. Occupying a doubly marginalized position as both a member of a historically stigmatized ethnic minority and a non-believer in a religiously defined nation, he must continually negotiate suspicion, belonging, and social acceptance in everyday life. Through ethnographic study in Kadam Choeling Indonesia (KCI), a community of Chinese Indonesian Vajrayana adherents, I discuss how KCI Buddhists utilize …

Through constantly insisting on their own ignorance about practical decision-making while simultaneously referring to the authority of their spiritual teacher, I …

A dream of guru came to me
Based on an ethnographic study among Chinese Indonesians who practice Tibetan Buddhism, we analyze doctrinal beliefs and meanings associated with the appearance of spiritual teacher in dreams. The most common meanings conveyed in their narratives were the beliefs that Guru-related dreams signify successful spiritual practice, a prophetic insight into future events, and an encouragement for further endeavor in spiritual practice. For a significant…
Teka-Teki Poliandri
