  • New radiocarbon dates from early medieval cemeteries in central and northern Italy

Open Access•Candace Rice, Candace M Rice et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026

This paper presents 56 AMS radiocarbon dates from three early medieval sites in Italy: nine from the Roman Villa of Vacone in Vacone (RI), Lazio, 29 from the Roman Villa of Selvicciola in Ischia di Castro (VT), Lazio, and 18 from the necropolis of Povegliano Veronese (VR), Veneto. These results more than double the number of previously published radiocarbon dates from early medieval Italy and are therefore a substantial contribution to the absolu…

Open Access•Paola Saccheri, Martinoia et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to document and contextualize cranial trauma attributable to interpersonal violence in one Langobard individual from the Ferrovia necropolis in Cividale del Friuli (NE Italy). MATERIALS: The study examines one human skeleton: a middle-aged female dated between 590 and 630 CE. • Isolation and Identity in a 5th/6th century Ostrogothic Rural Community in Frascaro, Italy

Sarah Defant, Caterina Giostra et al.•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2025

This study investigates the mobility and integration of a rural Ostrogothic community in Frascaro in Northern Italy (~490–550 CE) through the combination of strontium isotope analysis (87Sr/86Sr) and archaeological context. While there are written sources about the Ostrogothic presence in Italy, direct evidence of Ostrogothic communities in Northern Italy remains limited, particularly outside strategic or military contexts. This study represents …

  • Stabbed to death

    Open Access•Carlotta Zeppilli, I Micarelli et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 50

Here we report the reconstruction of the osteobiography of an adult male buried in the Longobard cemetery of Povegliano Veronese (Northern Italy, late 6th - early 8th century CE), who shows signs of interpersonal violence. The palaeopathological investigation reveals sharp force traumas on the body of the fourth lumbar vertebra and on two right ribs. The absence of signs of healing or bone remodelling indicates that the defects were perimortem. T…

  • An unprecedented case of cranial surgery in Longobard Italy (6th-8th century) using a cruciform incision

Open Access•I Micarelli, Flavia Strani et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023•References: 26

The Longobard necropolis of Castel Trosino dates from the 6th to the 8th century CE. Among the tombs excavated, the skull of an older female shows the first evidence of a cross-shaped bone modification on a living subject. Macroscopic, microscopic, and CT scan analyses revealed signs of at least two sets of scraping marks. Specifically, SEM analysis shows that perimortem bone-scraping traces are present on the skull. Both healed and non-healed de…

  • Genetica e statistica per una migliore conoscenza della cultura materiale barbarica

    Caterina Giostra•ARTICLE•Hortus Artium Medievalium•2022
