Amber workshops in Central Europe during the Early Iron Age. Technology, chemical analyses, and Amber Roads
The largest peak in the distribution of raw amber from the Baltic and the North Sea throughout European history can be identified in the middle of the 1st millennium BC. Raw amber was processed in the amber workshops the Early Iron Age (800–370 BC). This study reveals how these amber workshops can be reliably identified and what their distribution reveals about long-distance exchange systems in Europe. The amber was not only a strategic commodity…
Corals and shells of the sea mollusc as an example of long-distance contacts in the Early Iron Age in Central Europe
New discoveries of worked pieces of red coral Corallium rubrum and shells of sea molluscs from Bohemia and Moravia of the Early Iron Age gave rise to the creation of an article that follows these finds in the territory of the Czech Republic, Bavaria and Austria and summarizes the current state of research on these remarkable imports from the 8 th to the beginning 4 th century BC. Red sea coral and see mollusk shells were imported, processed and u…
The Chronology of the Hallstatt Period in Moravia. Impact of the Wagon Graves for Synchronisation of East and West Hallstatt Cultures
Porotic hyperostosis and cribra orbitalia in samples from the Late Hillfort Period sites at Dětkovice - Za zahradama (district Prostějov) and Vídeňská street (district Brno), Czech Republic
centuries AD. A total of 605 subjects were assessed for age, sex, and the above-stated pathologies using standard methods. The influence of age and sex on the occurrence of these pathologies was examined statistically. Results indicated that at the site of Dětkovice - Za zahradama, porotic hyperostosis, and cribra orbitalia do not depend on sex or age. However, at Vídeňská Street in Brno, these pathologies do not depend on sex, but they depend on…
Kamenné sekeromlaty v kontextu objektů ze starší doby bronzové na Moravě
Finds of stone hammer-axes are relatively uncommon in the context of the Early Bronze Age, not just in Moravia. They are more frequently encountered in the funeral environment while their occurrence in settlement contexts can be described as exceptional. The two newly presented boat-shaped doubleedged hammer-axes originate from both a settlement site (Držovice, ‘Díly odvrahoviční’) and a grave (Olomouc-Slavonín, ‘Horní lán’) of the Únětice cultur…
Beyond Technology
The Bell Beaker site near Brodek u Prostějova (Czechia) has yielded remains of a large timber construction accompanied by four symmetrical ritual deposits with numerous artefacts, including more than fifty ceramic vessels. Their decoration consists of incised patterns, in nineteen cases with preserved white inlaid incrustations. To investigate the social relations at this extraordinary site, a multi-analytical and micro-destructive approach was e…
Low Radon Cleanroom for Underground Laboratories
Aim of a low radon cleanroom technology is to minimize at the same time radon, radon decay products concentration and aerosol concentration and to minimize deposition of radon decay products on the surfaces. The technology placed in a deep underground laboratory such as LSM Modane with suppressed muon flux and shielded against external gamma radiation and neutrons provides “Zero dose” space for basic research in radiobiology (validity of the LNT …
Settlements of Local Phase of Corded Ware culture in Moravia
In the context of the long discussion on the (non-)existence of permanent Corded Ware culture (CWC) settlements and the semi-nomadic way of life of their inhabitants, ongoing excavations of common settlements have newly gained immense significance, as in almost all other regions, also in Moravia (Olomouc-Slavonín, Horní lán; Vřesovice; Seloutky; Hulín-Pravčice 1; Prostějov, Za tržištěm). Earlier sporadic indications have been joined by a series o…

The Liminal Passage
The article presents a hoard from the Final Bronze Age found in 2005 in the cadastre of Dolany-Nové Sady ‒ “Sádek”, Olomouc District (CZ). It consists of 2 bronze axes, 3 bronze cheek-pieces of a horse’s bit, 2 bronze phalerae, decorated bronze belt sheet, 6 fragments of 3 different plano-convex ingots and a ceramic vessel. The paper deals with the chronological-typological evaluation of the hoard and especially the motivations for its deposition…

First direct evidence of broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum) in Central Europe
Jedná se o první bezpečně rozpoznaný exemplář tohoto specifického druhu artefaktu z území Moravy a jeden z mála kusů pocházejících z českých zemí vůbec. Jeho publikace rozšiřuje dosud známé spektrum devocionálií (nejen) cášského původu a v rovině obecné ilustruj…
