Fertility Changes in Rural Moroccan Berbers during the 20th Century
Morocco’s fertility pattern evolved in the 20th century from a traditional model close to ‘natural fertility’ to a modern pattern incorporating contraception. The very high fertility rate of nearly 7 offspring per woman observed in the 1960s was still at a level of 5.5 offspring per woman in the early 1980s. The total fertility rate subsequently declined to 2.5 by 2003. This decline was apparently, principally, the result of two factors in the ur…
Characteristics of menstrual cycles in Moroccan girls
Population studies on normal and dysfunctional characteristics of menstrual cycles are scarce for western populations and practically non-existent for non-western ones. Recent data suggest that the type of menstrual cycle can be relevant for later gynaecological problems in several ways. The type of menstrual cycle is related to menarcheal age in a way that those with early maturation show more menstrual disorders which are the largest diagnosis …
Secular trend in age at menarche in Marrakesh (Morocco)
The median age at menarche observed by status-quo methods in 1991, and calculated by mean of probit analysis in a sample of 239 school girls from Marrakesh aged 11-17 years, was 13.75 +/- 0.17 years. Compared with earlier observations obtained for Moroccan girls in 1982 and 1987 the results show a decline of age at menarche of 0.55 year in the period 1982-91 and 0.25 year in the period 1987-91

Once having grouped the girls according to the different environmental factors, we calculated the mean menarcheal age for earch group. Comparisons of these means show that only the family size and the…
