  • Agta hunter–gatherer oral microbiomes are shaped by contact network structure

    Open Access•Federico Musciotto, Begoña Dobón et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Human Sciences•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Here we investigate the effects of extensive sociality and mobility on the oral microbiome of 138 Agta hunter–gatherers from the Philippines. Our comparisons of microbiome composition showed that the Agta are more similar to Central African BaYaka hunter–gatherers than to neighbouring farmers. We also defined the Agta social microbiome as a set of 137 oral bacteria (only 7% of 1980 amplicon sequence variants) significantly influenced by social co…

  • The making of the oral microbiome in Agta hunter–gatherers

    Open Access•Begoña Dobón, Federico Musciotto et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Human Sciences•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Ecological and genetic factors have influenced the composition of the human microbiome during our evolutionary history. We analysed the oral microbiota of the Agta, a hunter–gatherer population where some members have adopted an agricultural diet. We show that age is the strongest factor modulating the microbiome, probably through immunosenescence since we identified an increase in the number of species classified as pathogens with age. We also c…

  • Predicting urban innovation from the US Workforce Mobility Network

Open Access•Moreno Bonaventura, Luca Maria Aiello et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2021

While great emphasis has been placed on the role of social interactions as a driver of innovation growth, very few empirical studies have explicitly investigated the impact of social network structures on the innovation performance of cities. Past research has mostly explored scaling laws of socio-economic outputs of cities as determined by, for example, the single predictor of population. Here, by drawing on a publicly available dataset of the s…

  • Characterization of hunter-gatherer networks and implications for cumulative culture

  • Elementary processes governing the evolution of road networks

Open Access•Emanuele Strano, Vincenzo Nicosia et al.•ARTICLE•Scientific Reports•2012

Urbanisation is a fundamental phenomenon whose quantitative characterisation is still inadequate. We report here the empirical analysis of a unique data set regarding almost 200 years of evolution of the road network in a large area located north of Milan (Italy). We find that urbanisation is characterised by the homogenisation of cell shapes, and by the stability throughout time of high-centrality roads which constitute the backbone of the urban…

  • Street Centrality and the Location of Economic Activities in Barcelona

    Open Access•Sergio Porta, Latora et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2012•Cited by: 19•References: 33

The paper examines the geography of three street centrality indices and their correlations with various types of economic activities in Barcelona, Spain. The focus is on what type of street centrality (closeness, betweenness and straightness) is more closely associated with which type of economic activity (primary and secondary). Centralities are calculated purely on the street network by using a multiple centrality assessment model, and a kernel…

  • Street Centrality and Densities of Retail and Services in Bologna, Italy

Open Access•Sergio Porta, Emanuele Strano et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B…•2009

This paper examines the relationship between street centrality and densities of commercial and service activities in the city of Bologna, northern Italy. Street centrality is calibrated in a multiple centrality assessment model composed of multiple measures such as closeness, betweenness, and straightness. Kernel density estimation is used to transform datasets of centrality and activities to one scale unit for analysis of correlation between the…

  • Centrality measures in spatial networks of urban streets

Open Access•Paolo Crucitti, Latora et al.•ARTICLE•Physical Review E•2006

We study centrality in urban street patterns of different world cities represented as networks in geographical space. The results indicate that a spatial analysis based on a set of four centrality indices allows an extended visualization and characterization of the city structure. A hierarchical clustering analysis based on the distributions of centrality has a certain capacity to distinguish different classes of cities. In particular, self-organ…

  • The Network Analysis of Urban Streets

Open Access•Sergio Porta, Paolo Crucitti et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B…•2006

The network metaphor in the analysis of urban and territorial cases has a long tradition, especially in transportation or land-use planning and economic geography. More recently, urban design has brought its contribution by means of the ‘space syntax’ methodology. All these approaches-though under different terms like ‘accessibility’, ‘proximity’, ‘integration’ ‘connectivity’, ‘cost’, or ‘effort’-focus on the idea that some places (or streets) ar…

  • Efficient Behavior of Small-World Networks

Open Access•Latora, Vito Latora et al.•ARTICLE•Physical Review Letters•2001

We introduce the concept of efficiency of a network as a measure of how efficiently it exchanges information. By using this simple measure, small-world networks are seen as systems that are both globally and locally efficient. This gives a clear physical meaning to the concept of "small world," and also a precise quantitative analysis of both weighted and unweighted networks. We study neural networks and man-made communication and transportation …
