  • Ed Atkins’s dildonic hand

    Open Access•Lucy Bollington•ARTICLE•Screen•2024

In Ed Atkins's gallery film, Even Pricks (2013), we are presented with a digitally rendered hand that mimics and modifies the thumbs-up gesture performed by one of today's most prominent screen hands -the Facebook 'like' icon.Throughout his film, Atkins manipulates the rendered hand, especially its thumb, so that the 'like' is recast by association. He draws the hand into a series of penetrative couplings with bodily orifices (eyes, ears, nose) an…

  • Landscapes of desapropiación

    Lucy Bollington•ARTICLE•Journal of Romance Studies•2021

This article compares two documentary films characterised by entanglements of landscapes, water and violent loss: Tatiana Huezo’s Tempestad [Tempest] (2016) and Betzabé García’s Los reyes del pueblo que no existe [Kings of Nowhere] (2015). Huezo lingers over different landscapes to evoke a dispersive cartography of dispossession existing beneath the surface of political visibility in contemporary Mexico. García’s documentary focuses on infrastruc…

  • Towards a new model for approaching conflict images

    Open Access•Lucy Bollington•ARTICLE•Screen•2021

This article provides a theoretically informed close reading of acclaimed filmmaker Hito Steyerl’s striking engagement with the War on Terror in her 2007 documentary artist’s film Lovely Andrea. I discuss how the politics of Steyerl’s confrontation with war are located in her careful selection and assembling of transnational images into intricate motifs forged around the body, the rope (or stand-ins for the rope) and the theme of bondage. These m…

  • Animality, Sexuality and the Politics of Death in Mario Bellatin's Salón de belleza

    Open Access•Lucy Bollington•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Latin American Research•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 16

In Bellatin's Salón de belleza aquariums filled with exotic fish function as the symbolic nexus through which queer bodies and destructive power intersect and become involved in mutational processes. This article brings the novella into dialogue with biopolitical philosophy, queer theory and posthumanism in order to conceptualise the multivalent implications of the text's trans-species reflections and crossings. My analysis moves beyond existing …

  • Fabricating the Thanatopolitical Body in Rodrigo Rey Rosa's Cárcel de Árboles

    Lucy Bollington•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American…•2018•References: 19

Guatemalan author Rodrigo Rey Rosa’s first novella, Cárcel de árboles (1991), tells the story of a secret politico-medical experiment conducted on prisoners who have been condemned to death by the State. The experiment takes place in a prison camp located in the tropical forest. In this article, I examine the portrayal of power and embodiment in Rey Rosa’s novella, placing the text in dialogue with thanatopolitical theory and outlining the ways i…
