The Role of Screentime and Family Resiliency in Overweight/Obesity in Children and Children with Developmental Disabilities Before and During Covid-19
Prevalence of overweight/obesity in all children and children with DD during the COVID-19 pandemic continued to rise. Screentime was found to be a key determinant in increased weight status. Contrary to our hypothesis, family resilience failed to emerge as a significant protective factor for OW/OB; additional research is needed to explore the protective role of family resiliency on childhood obesity. Study findings may provide insights into devel…
Dimensions of Organizational and Personal Evidence Use by Senior Managers in Private Child Welfare Agencies
Scholars know little about how human service agency leaders use evidence to improve organizational performance. We draw on interviews with 27 private child welfare administrators in six states to examine how senior leaders use evidence, the types of evidence they use, and specific organizational processes established to support evidence use. Results suggest evidence use in private agencies takes diverse forms, including the analysis of internal d…
Disparities in prevalence of screening/monitoring in children with intellectual and developmental disabilities: Culturally sensitive provider can mitigate effects
Introduction About one in six children in the US, about 17% of the population, have one or more intellectual or developmental disabilities. Increases in disability due to neurodevelopmental or mental health conditions have increased by 21% in the last decade. Early intervention based on developmental screening and provider-initiated monitoring can significantly improve long-term health and cognitive outcomes. This paper assesses whether differenc…
Associations of Homelessness With Primary Care and Acute Care Utilization Among Medicaid-Enrolled Youth
BACKGROUND: Youth comprise one-third of the US homeless population. However, little is known about how homelessness affects health care utilization. OBJECTIVE: Examine associations of homelessness with hospitalization, primary care, and ED visits, varying by race/ethnicity, among Medicaid-enrolled youth. RESEARCH DESIGN: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using California Medicaid claims data on youth beneficiaries with complex needs. We ex…

Organizational supports for evidence use in child welfare
Despite its importance to achieving positive outcomes for vulnerable children and families, use of evidence by child welfare managers and practitioners remains limited. This study describes four types of organizational supports that child welfare agencies may use to facilitate evidence use. Data collected in 2016 from a six-state sample of private child welfare agencies are used to examine agency investment in different supports for evidence use …

Practice research methods in social work: Processes, applications and implications for social service organisations
Although social work research is commonly rooted within social service settings, it can be difficult for social work researchers and practitioners to develop and sustain participatory studies that specifically promote knowledge sharing and service improvement involving organisational practice. One participatory approach is practice research (PR), which involves social work researchers and practitioners collaborating to define, understand and try …

Relational Mechanisms in Complex Contracting: Factors Associated with Private Managers’ Satisfaction with and Commitment to the Contract Relationship
The complexity of human service delivery means that contracts are often incomplete or contingent. When contracted services or products are complex, relational contracting can function as a critical informal accountability mechanism. This study introduces and tests a conceptual framework of relational processes and organizational factors hypothesized to inform private human service contract outcomes. Data from a 2015 survey of private nonprofit an…
When Voluntary Stopping of Eating and Drinking in Advanced Dementia Is No Longer Voluntary
In “On Avoiding Deep Dementia,” Norman Cantor astutely notes that, for some individuals, the concept of “protracted maintenance during progressive cognitive dysfunction and helplessness is an intolerably degrading prospect.” This cannot be argued with. Cantor's solution, however—that in the wake of a dementia diagnosis, patients should have the option to direct, in advance, instructions for voluntary stopping of eating and drinking should they de…

Determinants of Implementation Effectiveness in a Physical Activity Program for Church-Going Latinas
Faith-based interventions show promise for reducing health disparities among ethnic minority populations. However, churches vary significantly in their readiness and willingness to support these programs. Semistructured interviews were conducted with priests, other church leaders, and lay health advisors in churches implementing a physical activity intervention targeting Latinas. Implementation effectiveness was operationalized as average 6-month…
Caregiver involvement in behavioural health services in the context of child welfare service referrals: A qualitative study
Human service agencies serve a growing number of adults with behavioral health needs. Despite these agencies' key role in identifying need and facilitating services, many individuals do not receive care or end services prematurely. Few studies have explored the experiences of families referred to behavioral health services by such agencies or the extent to which families' perceptions of service need align with those of treatment providers and fro…
Child Welfare Caseworker Education and Caregiver Behavioral Service Use and Satisfaction With the Caseworker
Social work has long been identified with child welfare, and research has generally found that child welfare caseworkers with a social work degree are better prepared than aseworkers with other degrees. Little knowledge exists though about the relationship between caseworker professional background and caregiver behavioral health service use or their satisfaction with the caseworker. Using data from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Wel…

Under What Conditions Does Caseworker-Caregiver Racial/Ethnic Similarity Matter for Housing Service Provision? An Application of Representative Bureaucracy Theory
In this article, we examine child welfare caseworkers' housing-related service strategies when they serve culturally similar versus culturally dissimilar clients. Testing hypotheses drawn from representative bureaucracy theory and using data from the second cohort of the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being, we find that when non-Caucasian caseworkers share the same racial/ethnic background as caregivers, caseworkers use more active…
The Role of the Private Sector in Child Welfare: Historical Reflections and a Contemporary Snapshot Based on the National Survey of Private Child and Family Serving Agencies
The centennial of the founding of the Children's Bureau is an appropriate time to examine the involvement of private agencies in child welfare service provision. While placing the role of the private sector in a historical context, this article reviews current trends in child welfare practice at the system and organizational levels: namely, the contributions of private agencies across state child welfare systems. Summarizing results from the Nati…

This study examined the effect of specific mental health disorders on the risk of juvenile justice system involvement and subsequent recidivism among maltreated children placed in out-of-home care. The sample was comprised of all children in Florida aged 7-17 years who were investigated for maltreatment and subsequently placed in out-of-home care between July 1, 2004, and June 30, 2005 (N = 5,720). Presence of mental health disorders and absence …
