Today, we see many different forms of separatists and what may be a safe place for some may be provocative for others. In this article, we focus on separatist spaces, by analysing complaints submitted to the Equality Ombudsman, a governmental agency that supervises compliance with the Discrimination Act in Sweden. This paper offers an empirically grounded understanding of the historical processes by which economic and institutional actors, particularly industry networks operating over time, influenced regional-scale land use policies at critical junctures involving land conflicts. This study analyses the responses and reactions among women and men in Umeå during the period of threat from a serial rapist, the so-called Haga Man.
