Creating an Afro-sensed, Community-engaged School: Views from Parents and School Personnel
Schools are important for the development and socialization of children to learn to function as responsible citizens, but there can be obstacles, including differences in culture, expectations, and lack of communication between adults at school and home. Family engagement with schools has been shown to improve learner outcomes and minimize differences in culture between home and school. School social work is a specialized field of practice that c…
Bringing Sanctuary to School: Assessing School Climate as a Foundation for Culturally Responsive Trauma-Informed Approaches for Urban Schools
Decades of federal economic policies that have concentrated poverty into isolated communities have devastated urban education, and expose youth and families to high stress and trauma. Disproportionately negative outcomes for students of color and those who are economically disadvantaged can be understood as manifestations of negative racial school climate and inadequate responsiveness to students’ trauma. As part of a school–university partnershi…

We're GRAND: A qualitative design and development pilot project addressing the needs and strengths of grandparents raising grandchildren
Custodial grandparents play a significant role in sustaining healthy families, but the caregiving is demanding. A social research design and development process informed a school district‐university partnership project responding to the needs of a group of custodial grandparents. Three phases of the project are described: (i) needs assessment; (ii) design and implementation of a psychoeducational group facilitated by social work faculty and a sch…
Think Creatively and Act Decisively: Creating an Antiracist Alliance of Social Workers
Each month throughout the New York City (NYC) area, more than 20 separate gatherings bring social workers and other professionals together to discuss one thing: undoing structural racism in their organization, community, university, and profession. Over 8,000 strong in 2014, the Anti-Racist Alliance (ARA) began in 2002 in the living room of one very motivated social worker and a small group of dedicated colleagues. They had all attended an Undoin…
