Situational factors shape moral judgements in the trolley dilemma in Eastern, Southern and Western countries in a culturally diverse sample
Deviance Credit
Leaders often deviate from group norms or social conventions, sometimes innovating and sometimes engaging in serious transgressions or illegality. We propose that group members are prone to be more permissive toward both forms of deviance in the case of ingroup leaders compared to other ingroup members or outgroup members and leaders. This granting of “deviance credit” is hypothesized to be underpinned by perceptions of an ingroup leader's protot…
The Body Move
The first quarter of the twentieth century in Portugal was characterised by a series of important historical and political events: the Regicide (1 st February 1908), the fall of the Monarchy and establishment of the Republic ( By this time, women could not yet vote and they were systematically ignored in the debate of crucial social issues. Therefore, the main question here addressed is how poetry as free embodiment can take part in a gender revo…
Art as a tool for cross-cultural conversation
This paper examines the concepts and perceptions of art among the Igbo people of Nigeria and the Ainu people of Japan. From a practical point of view, it assesses each group’s notion of art and how it has fared in the postcolonial experience. It grapples with the the “lingering after-effects” of colonialism in the guises of postcolonialism and how they are manifested in the arts of the two groups. Since the postcolonial thrives on hybridity and c…
Absence and repetition in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider
Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet set in the politically volatile Kashmir of the 1990s was one of the most anticipated Hindi movies of 2014, and in the weeks leading up to and after its release, spawned a media frenzy. Both as a Shakespearean adaptation and as a film about Kashmir, Haider has had to deal with the exacting standards and accompanying political discourse and debates of both fields. This paper will be mo…
Between a rock and a hard place
Immigration, urbanization, crime, racketeering, and bootlegging are only a few of the many crises that befell America in 1920s. These predicaments, however, were not without consequences. According to the novellas as well as the non-literary texts under discussion, immigration brought with it alien and anti-puritan (derived from Puritanism or more precisely “Reformed Protestantism.” See Humanitas (88)) values that went hand in hand with promiscui…
Sounds and sound thinking in |xam-ka !au
This paper questions preconceptions that situate the |xam in a Stone Age past where they can be objectified by a timeless gaze. From such appropriations and (miss)-representation, the |xam emerge either as shamans or victims or as the quintessential proto-scientists. We explore instead the expressive culture of the |xam and describe its significance as “applied history” for people’s lives in the present. Our investigation follows two routes; firs…
Coming to America
The 1903 Delhi durbar was a historically significant event designed to celebrate British sovereignty over India. The durbar’s pageantry re-appeared in the United States in various formats that ignored its original political purpose but adapted its imposed and invented princely traditions. These dissimilar milieus—stereoviews, postcards of Luna Park in Coney Island and circus parades—reached their respective peaks in commodifying orientalist exces…
Women, Erotica and Citizenship in the Eighteenth Century
This article addresses eighteenth-century tragedy from the point of view of its heroines. The author considers the neoclassical reworking of tragic events, with its empowering of ancient, and also modern, women, which proliferated in the Iberian Peninsula. Within this framework, Virginia and Megara, two tragedies by male authors, provide powerful depictions of female civic engagement, drawing both on a radical stance of deciding upon life and dea…
