Activating Dormant Capabilities on the Social Holidays – the Experience of Social Inclusion as a Conversion Factor
This article explores how social holidays in Finland function as capability-enhancing interventions for low-income families. Drawing on the behavioural capability approach and qualitative interview data, the study examines how social holiday experiences, especially those that promote a sense of equality, belonging, and mastery–can break cycles of negative anticipation and activate practical reason. In prolonged adversity, individuals’ decision-ma…

The current research examines the possibilities of music education in supporting the well-being of families living in demanding life situations. The context for the study is Family Sound Hammock, a 3-year research and development project that took place in the metropolitan area of Finland from 2020 to 2023. The project aimed at systematically supporting the well-being of families especially by strengthening their capacities for interaction in and…
Social inclusion work
This co-research explores power and agency in social inclusion work (SIW) in a service targeting marginalised people using legal and illegal substances that aims to combat inequality. It focuses on shared knowledge-making praxis, in which knowledge channels all participants’ power, actions and agency. The research material consists of a community-based SIW funding application and community-related field notes. The findings note that community-bas…

This oral history article, inspired by research conducted among minorities, explores the interrelations between intergenerational disadvantage, experience of social exclusion, and silence within family histories. During the fieldwork, 13 study participants shared their transgenerational family stories that shed light on intergenerational disadvantage, including substance abuse, trauma, violence, emotional coldness, neuropsychiatric characteristic…
Development and Psychometric Evaluation of the Experiences of Social Inclusion Scale
In recent years, a growing body of literature on social inclusion on an individual level has emerged. Yet, there is no common understanding of the concept itself and how to measure it. The objective of this study was to document the development of the Experiences of Social Inclusion Scale (ESIS), including the theoretical framework used for this purpose, which draws strongly on the capability approach. The ESIS is a brief closed survey instrument…
On social and psychological consequences of prolonged poverty–A longitudinal narrative study from Finland
By means of qualitative longitudinal material, this article explores meaningfulness during persistent monetary poverty through an integrative framework, which builds upon conceptualisations of meaning in life (coherence, significance, and purpose) and modes of being (labour, work, action). The material consists of 36 autobiographical accounts and their follow-up accounts from 2006 and 2012. The analysis reveals that in the developed welfare state…
Gendered Experiences of Poverty and Recognition in the Finnish Welfare State
We examined experiences of recognition in the accounts of poverty of 25 women and 25 men, using directed content analysis and the concepts of recognition and gender contract. Irrespective of gender, poverty causes various harms. The Finnish welfare state, which rests on standardized universalism and a social security system based on predefined risks, is particularly sensitive to economic inequality. It fails to grant recognition to poor people in…
