  • Restoring forest cover at diverse sites across Canada can balance synergies and trade-offs

Open Access•C Ronnie Drever, Alison M Long et al.•ARTICLE•One Earth•2025

  • Unveiling the benefits and gaps of wild pollinators on nutrition and income

Open Access•Gabriela Teixeira Duarte, Richard Schuster et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Pollinators play a crucial role in global crop production, enhancing crop yields, nutritional value and fruit quality. However, their wild populations worldwide have been experiencing alarming declines. We investigated the contribution of wild pollinators to nutrition and farmer income in Canada, while examining the spatial distribution of pollination services. We used publicly available data on crop types, yields, nutrient content, and farm gate…

  • Identifying key ecosystem service providing areas to inform national-scale conservation planning

    Open Access•Matthew G E Mitchell, Richard Schuster et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Effectively conserving ecosystem services in order to maintain human wellbeing is a global need that requires an understanding of where ecosystem services are produced by ecosystems and where people benefit from these services. However, approaches to effectively identify key locations that have the capacity to supply ecosystem services and actually contribute to meeting human demand for those services are lacking at broad spatial scales. We devel…

  • Vertebrate biodiversity on indigenous-managed lands in Australia, Brazil, and Canada equals that in protected areas

  • Conflict and Care

    Open Access•Savannah S Young, Denise C Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Global Qualitative Nursing Research•2016

Israel has provided immediate healthcare to Syrian children, civilians and fighters since early 2013 despite being in an official state of war with Syria since 1973. We present qualitative findings from a larger mixed-methods phenomenological study to understand how the geopolitical and social history of Israel and Syria influences healthcare providers and Syrian patient caregivers in northern Israel. Theories of humanization and cognitive disson…

  • Rank, relationships, and responses to intruders among adult male vervet monkeys

Open Access•Richard Schuster, Michael J Raleigh et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1993

We examined the influences of dyadic relationships among captive adult male vervet monkeys ( Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus ) on behavior directed toward caged “intruder” males placed inside subjects' enclosures. Subjects were all 9 adult male residents from three stable social groups, each of which contained 3 adult males, at least 3 adult females, and their immature offspring. Every male was observed in two 3‐hour sessions, each time with one o…

  • Cooperative social coordination and aggression

    Open Access•Richard Schuster, Barry D Berger et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1988•References: 29

Laboratory rats were used to investigate sex and strain differences in the effects of aggression on a cooperative behavior in which pairs learned to coordinate shuttling in a rectangular chamber. The level of aggression was manipulated by comparing males and females of the aggressive S3 strain and a less aggressive Sprague-Dawley-derived strain and housing same-sex partners either together or individually (8 groups, n = 7 pairs per group). Hormon…
