  • Preserving the contemporary mural “Musica Popolare” by Orticanoodles in Milan, Italy: Deterioration processes and protection performance of commercial coatings

Open Access•Nicolò Guarnieri, Laura Pagnin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2025•Cited by: 1

Six commercial coatings were applied on a real street artwork and monitored over 1-year of natural ageing. • In-situ testing protocol was set up for assessing protection efficacy and durability. • Acrylic-based coatings in sheltered areas showed adhesion issues and a tendency to attract PM. • None of the commercial coatings offered optimal protection after 1-year. This study aims to investigate the possibility of protecting real street artworks i…

  • The Effect of Exposure Condition on the Composition of the Corrosion Layers of the San Carlone of Arona

    Open Access•Chiara Petiti, B Salvadori et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2023•References: 1

The Colossus of San Carlo Borromeo, named San Carlone for its large dimensions, represents a unique opportunity to study the long-term effects of atmospheric corrosion on patina formation on historic copper sheets. The sculpture’s large dimensions, complex geometry, direct visitor interaction, and exposure conditions generate different microclimates. The purpose of this study is to understand how and to what extent these microclimates affect the …

  • Conservation of the Built Heritage: Pilot Site Approach to Design a Sustainable Process

    Open Access•Davide Gulotta, Lucia Toniolo•ARTICLE•Heritage•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 5

The conservation project of built heritage is a complex process, dealing with an extremely heterogeneous range of elements and different substrates with a large variety of conservation conditions. In recent years, its sustainability has become a relevant issue, due to the general limitation of resources and unique features of cultural heritage assets. The conservation project, therefore, requires a thorough knowledge of the specific characteristi…

Open Access•Davide Gulotta, Sara Goidanich et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2012•Cited by: 4•References: 18

This work investigates the decayed decoration of the ‘ Vergine del Carmelo ’ chapel, with a particular interest in the residual gildings. Samples of the finishing layers were examined by VIS‐UV optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled with EDX spectrometry, in order to evaluate the unusual degradation phenomena. Mineralogical composition of the stucco substrate was characterized by X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and FTIR spectroscopy.…

  • White Lumps in Fifth‐ to Seventeenth‐century Ad Mortars From Northern Italy

    Open Access•Silvia Bruni, F CARIATI et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1997•Cited by: 9•References: 5

Ancient mortars from northern Italy, dating from the fifth to the seventeenth century AD, were examined in order to formulate an hypothesis regarding the origin of the white lumps often observed in these mortars and in other samples of the same geographical provenance. Various characterization techniques were employed, including scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray powder diffraction and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and micro‐FTIR spectroscop…
