  • Comparison of HiSorb probes and sorbent tubes for the determination of VOCs emitted by two historical snuffboxes

Open Access•Emma Paolin, Eva Menart et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2026

Comparison of non-invasive sampling devices for VOCs emitted by historical snuffboxes. • Coupling of GC-MS with olfactory detection to combine chemical and olfactory data. • Comparison of olfactory data obtained with sorbent tubes filled with Tenax TA® and HiSorb probes. In the recent years, several sampling devices have been used for the non-destructive collection of volatile organic compounds in heritage environments. To heritage scientists and…

  • Tracing Yoruba Heritage in Brazil Through Olfactory Landscapes: A Sensory Approach to Cultural Heritage

    Open Access•Bruno C L Rodrigues, Luana P Queiroz et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025•References: 13

This study explores the role of olfaction in linking Brazilian cultural expressions with Yoruba heritages. Brazilian culture is deeply rooted in African traditions brought across the Atlantic, and this connection is evident in its foods, celebrations, and practices. Through a multidisciplinary approach combining bibliometric and historic review, fieldwork, and sensory analysis, the research reveals how distinct aromas, ranging from the scent of a…

  • Bahia’s Dendê and the Forgotten Knowledge: Cultural Heritage, Sustainability, and the Marginalization of Afro-Brazilian Traditions

Open Access•Luana P Queiroz, Robson Wilson Silva Pessoa et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025•References: 6

Palm oil (Elaeis guineensis), one of the most widely used vegetable oils globally, originates from West Africa and has played a significant role in food, health care, and historical trade networks. It holds cultural, historical, ecological and symbolic significance in Bahia, Brazil. Unlike industrial monocultures, Bahia’s dendê economy is rooted in biodiverse landscapes, maintained through artisanal methods and generational knowledge. Yet, this t…

  • Using Citizen Heritage Science to Monitor Remote Sites Before and During the First Covid-19 Lockdown: A Comparison of Two Methods

Open Access•Rosie Brigham, Scott Allan Orr et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation and Management of…•2022

This paper proposes citizen heritage science as an effective method to gather reliable data for monitoring and documenting heritage sites. For large heritage organisations the monitoring and documentation of sites in their care presents considerable challenges; continual monitoring of smaller, unstaffed, and more remote sites is often not practical. However, heritage sites are often popular destinations that receive high levels of visitors who carr…

  • Quantitative Assessment of Impact and Sensitivity of Imaging Spectroscopy for Monitoring of Ageing of Archival Documents

    Open Access•Roberto Padoan, M E Klein et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Ageing of historical documents often results in changes in the optical properties of the constituent materials. Imaging spectroscopy (IS) can be a valuable tool for monitoring of such changes, if the method fulfils two important conditions. Firstly, compared to natural ageing, the accumulated light dose from repeated measurements of the monitored document must not induce any significant degradation. Secondly, the monitoring instrumentation and pr…

  • Simulation of particulate matter ingress, dispersion and deposition in a historical building

  • On the Age and Content of Jar-35-a Sealed and Intact Storage Jar Found on the Southern Plateau of Qumran: On the age and content of Jar-35

Open Access•Kaare Lund Rasmussen, Jan Gunneweg et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2011•References: 11

An intact and sealed storage jar known as Jar-35 was found in 2004, south of the Qumran settlement. A previous study identified tartrate in the deposit of the jar, indicating the possible past presence of wine (Buti et al. 2006). However, we cannot confirm this finding. Using liquid and gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection, no trace of tartaric acid or salts thereof could be detected in our samples. We show that the major componen…
