Gidoodikosan Giiwitaabimin - We sit in a circle for kidneys, a strength-based qualitative study
The overall aim of this qualitative study was to inform recommendations towards Indigenous strength-based approaches for kidney health, prevention of disease and failure. Between 2020 and 2022, during the COVID-19 pandemic, we conducted online interviews and teleconferences with 16 participants from North Simcoe in Ontario, Canada. Participants shared their experiences revolving around kidney disease and care within Indigenous contexts. An adviso…
Nigerian Health Care Providers and Diabetes Self-Management Support
Nigeria struggles to reframe its traditional acute-care disease approach to health care to accommodate rising needs for chronic disease care. This interpretive descriptive study explored Nigerian healthcare providers' (HCPs) perspectives, experiences, and practices related to self-management support (SMS). Observational and experiential data were gathered from 19 HCPs at two urban hospitals in Southeastern Nigeria (seven physicians, four nurses, …
Holding Secrets While Living With Life-Threatening Illness
Communicating openly and directly about illness comes easily for some patients, whereas for others fear of disclosure keeps them silent. In this article, we discuss findings about the role of keeping secrets regarding health and illness. These findings were part of a larger project on how people with life-threatening illnesses re-story their lives. A narrative approach drawing on Frank's dialogical narrative analysis and Riesman's inductive appro…
Developing an Initial Program Theory to Explain How Patient-Reported Outcomes Are Used in Health Care Settings
A central aspect of any theory-driven realist investigation (synthesis or evaluation) is to develop an initial program theory (IPT). An IPT can be used to frame and understand how, for whom, why, and under what contexts complex interventions work or not. Despite well-established evidence that IPTs are a central aspect to any realist investigation, there is wide variation and a lack of methodological discussion on how to develop an IPT. In this ar…
Micro-Meso-Macro Practice Tensions in Using Patient-Reported Outcome and Experience Measures in Hospital Palliative Care
This article applies a micro-meso-macro analytical framework to understand clinicians' experiences and perspectives of using patient-reported outcome and experience measures (PROMs and PREMs) in routine hospital-based palliative care. We structure our discussion through qualitative analysis of a design and implementation project for using an electronic tablet-based tool among hospital-based palliative clinicians to assess patients' and their fami…
Open Data in Qualitative Research
There is a growing movement for research data to be accessed, used, and shared by multiple stakeholders for various purposes. The changing technological landscape makes it possible to digitally store data, creating opportunity to both share and reuse data anywhere in the world for later use. This movement is growing rapidly and becoming widely accepted as publicly funded agencies are mandating that researchers open their research data for sharing…
Narrative Research Evolving
Narrative research methodology is evolving, and we contend that the notion of emergent design is vital if narrative inquiry (NI) is to continue flourishing in generating new knowledge. We situate the discussion within the narrative turn in qualitative research while drawing on experiences of conducting a longitudinal narrative study. The philosophical tensions encountered are described, as our understanding and application of narrative approaches…
